Thanks, never seen that one. Very entertaining fight!

You could say this was a typical example of being able to dish it out but not take it. Coetzer took quite a beating but he nearly knocked Duplooy out with a single punch ... very impressive. How did Coetzer do against Occasio? I've never seen that one either.

    I haven't either.

Apparently, Coetzer and Ocasio fought twice with Pierre losing the first one, and winning the rematch.

Gee I guess a fighter couldn't hardly miss Du Plooy with a left hook. I think I did see him actually duck under one left hook. Really good fight though, on both guys part.

    I remember this fight well.

For years, this was one of those mythical matchups that everyone in SA wanted to see, but thought would never happen. Both guys were looking to break into the top 10 world ranking and get a title shot and avoided each other.

They were two very contasting fighters.
Coetzer was the national champion, but was seen as somewhat dour and unexciting, although he had the very experienced Alan Toweel in his corner.
He was a quiet, conservative type who was shielded from probing media scrutiny by his camp. He was a good body puncher who needed a few rounds to get warmed up.

Du Plooy was the "bad boy" of boxing and was outspoken and a bit of a rebel, and was the more exciting, if less disciplined, fighter. He was a head-hunter and started very quickly. He was seen as the more naturally talented fighter.

There was intense interest in this fight from people of all walks of life here, because for many years the question was "who beats who" and we would finally know our answer.
The media made Coetzer a slight favourite going in.

Coetzer prevailed as you can see, ans went on to fight and lose to Bowe, Bruno and Foreman. He wasn't the most talented fighter in the world and was too mechanical, but he was as brave as they come and had a rock-like chin. His biggest downfall was his inability to really hurt the world class fighters.

The Coetzer-Occasio fights were rather boring affairs. Occasio used all his guile and experience to defeat the heavily-favoured Coetzer on points. In the rematch Coetzer still struggled, but won narrowly on points. He never could solve Ossie's style for some reason.
