even though it was close, i felt oscar conclusively deserved it by his strong finish It was ike fight for the taking cos oscar was really off. But he never ceased the initiative
with the exception of the Tito fight, Oscar know how to close. Winning those last 2 rounds did it for him. Great fight, one of my favorites of Oscar.
i scored the fight even, 113-113. i gave oscar a 10-7 round in the 12th. he had a knockdown and then halpern could have stopped the fight in the flurry that followed. good fight. quartey's jab gave oscar hell.
Most of the fight was pretty slow. DLH did too little for most of the fight for me to score it for him. It's pretty impressive that Quartey was inactive for 16 months and then fight so well against a fighter of Oscar's caliber.
I had it for Ike by a couple of rounds. Great finish from Oscar but it wasn't enough IMHO. Quartey's jab was unreal in this fight. It's amazing how De la Hoya went from being known for finishing great to getting a reputation for gassing late in such a short time.
Ike took it, can't remember my exact card. It's been years since I've seen it. Though I do remember scratching my head wondering why people pegged it as one of the best fights of the 90's. :huh:huh
As a whole, it really wasn't a very good fight at all. It had two exciting rounds, and most of it was a posefest. Not a skillful chessmatch where one guy makes a mistake and the other makes him pay, it was largely two guys doing little. A writer for The Ring described it very well: boredom mixed in with excellent but infrequent action.
Ike was jabbing DLH's face off for many of the middle rounds. Not sure if either won it clearly but people usually remember DLH's strong finish and forget about Ike's great work of the jab. DLH was too tense and this performance wasn't solid from him.
