we always criticise a fighter for not retiring at the top.

jones should have retired after tarver 1, even with the controversy.

This is somewhat debatable. I watched the fight on youtube recently and because it was in another language I kept off the volume off it until the last clip when I viewed the 6th round on HBO so the volume was on that fight. Watching the fight without volume I say that Lewis was picking when to exert himself. He'd look sort of lacadasical, and then he'd fire one or two power shots and repeat the process. He was pretty much doing this from the 4th round onward. But also by the 5th round, he started walking Vitali down. He'd just take his punches and keep on coming. In the 6th round with the volume on, the emphasis seemed to be on how tired Lewis was, yet he was acting pretty much the same as in the prior couple of rounds, conserving energy, then firing power shots. Also in the 6th, George did comment on how Lewis had no respect for Vitali's power. So I don't know how Vitali was going to start getting power behind his shots in the later rounds if he didn't have them after the 4th round, and I personally think Lewis could probably have fought another 3-4 rounds like that, but who really knows for sure?

I also think from watching the 6th round, that Lewis wasn't the only one tired. Either Vitali was hurt or tired, it was certainly one or the other, or perhaps both. One thing to notice is the shot Lewis landed with about 12 seconds left, it seemed to stun Vitali and he drapped himself over Lewis and Lewis was tryng to get enough space to land a follow up shot.

But don't take my word for it, go watch it for yourself. Better yet, watch with the volume off.

Lewis was supposed to fight someone else.Vitali was a " stand in" if they rematched, lewis would have been in better shape and dominated vitali imo
