Green was not a great opponent and definitely not as good as bruno but i was very impressed with tysons elusiveness and speed against green and especially his liveliness/youthfulness in the 10th round and his agility, footmovement late in the fight in comparison to the stationary cavemanishly aggressive tyson of the bruno fight. Against green he was still looking agile and lively in the last round. He still had plenty left in the tank in the last round against ribalta as well. It seems to me that by the time he fired rooney/rooney quit tyson had become so overconfident that he thought he could just go straight at his opponents and just beat them down without the angles, headmovement and jab. IMO what made tyson special was exactly that, without those things he was just a midget with a chin and a punch. Enough for bruno and williams but not for the douglas that showed up in tokyo.
yeah thats what I always thought. he needed every ingredient he had in his prime to be effective against great heavyweights, his lack of size against guys like Bowe and Lewis would be a problem without that quick foot movement and inside work he had with Rooney. Once those qualities slipped it showed in 90, 91, and personally I think it was stubbornness more than being out of his prime, it looked like he was dispensing with the head movement to prove a point he didnt need his old team, and started head hunting.
I think everyone knows about him not moving his head properly, him not using his legs and being a more stand up fighter, lack of combinations, not using his jab to get inside. But just look at his punching technique, his overall technique, foot placement, i am pretty sure once he left Rooney everything declined. Just look at his punching technique and how he changes his stance, his foot placement instantanoeously for every punch, this is such a crucial difference, this was the secret behind his devastating power and quickness and how once he connected on any opponent he hurt them very badly. Just watch Kevin Rooney explain from 1:23:45-1:26:25 This content is protected After he left the Catskill team, it is just unbelievable as to how he completely declined at every level as a boxer. He just purely relied on his natural power since then. Even when he did train for a fight, there would be complaints that he was just training to be conditioned, not training to be as skillful as possible.
I dont think that the fight with Green is a plus for Tyson's legacy. Green never beat a contender but he went the distance with Mike and gave him problems.
^^ Lol, so winning every round to win in a shut out is now turned around that Green gave Tyson problems........ Another under rated performance is the Bonehugger fight, especially if you skip all the Smith clinching and watch a highlight reel from the entire fight, it was all there, footwork, angles, head movement , jab , patience, extreme quickness and being elusive etc etc against a big , strong, tall difficult opponent who fought a strictly negative fight to survive.
Green have him no problems at all. This thread was about the technical aspect of Tyson's game, his legacy is a completely different issue. Green was never properly stopped. The only time he was stopped was years after the tyson fight wen green pulled a McCall and refuse to fight back because he felt underpaid.
For a 19 years old inexperienced fighter the prime Green win looks remarkable considering Tyson beat easier Green than Berbick did.
I always thought the Green win was decent for early Tyson, it was a bit of a grudge match and Green came in good shape, was trying to fire away at Tyson but was over matched, he was actually trying at times and didnt seem as intimidated as most.
Like the Bonecrusher you are right. Green like Bonecrusher later on, did try at first and he did swings some punches at Tyson but he just couldn't connect as Tyson was just too fast in evading the punches and as soon as he missed, he knew that he would get hit in return so grabbed on tight to Tyson to avoid this. Basically both Green and Smith went into survival mode as soon as they realised that they weren't fast enough to really connect with Tyson but he could easily connect with them in return.
I believe Tyson fought Green only 2 weeks after Tillis. Excellent turnaround as Rooney made sure Tyson trained hard in the gym and was able to win big AND last the distance. "Blood" became the first Tyson opponent to stay on his feet throughout the entire fight. Back to the thread...Tyson post Rooney was night and day compared to the original Team Tyson steamrolling their challengers. Nothing more needs to be said after the original post by Contro.
The rematch may have been interesting to see, pity it didn't get filmed. But mitch s eye tells the story...
