A guy I work with is insanely knowledgable about boxing, we got chatting about the Benn Eubank Watson era. He is adamant that Watson was a good few pounds over the weight a couple of days prior to the fight and effectivly starved himself to make the weight. I have read loads of stuff about the fight, both fighters books too and seen nothing about this. Has anyone else ever heard of this. I cant see it myself as he was moving up from 160-168.
he was an incredible physical specimen at 160 much less 168....he would run ten days and had a thick dense naturally lean muscular physique....not like the bloated weight trainers of today like Kirkland and porter...... In fact those 1970s reared black british fighters like Andries,Watson, Eubanks,Herol Graham, Errol Christie,Kirklaind Laing, Carl Thompson etc all had incredible physiques.
Eubank had a weight issue in their first fight, which resulted in him moving up to Super Middle. There was also talk that he'd miscalculated for the second fight. But I don't recall any similar talk about Watson.
