I really wish he would though, he has given us some great nights & shown incredible heart but surely its time to hang them up.

"I’m back in training and ready for my next fight!"
FightNews received the following statement from former WBC bantamweight champion Wayne McCullough:

Contrary to press reports, I haven’t officially announced my retirement although lately many journalists have felt the need to hang up my gloves for me. One of my problems is that I wear my heart on my sleeve and tend to say what’s on my mind. Sometimes that gets me in trouble. And that’s what happened on June 20th following my withdrawal from a fight that I was winning against Juan Ruiz in the Cayman Islands. After the bout I was being very hard on myself and told the crowd in attendance that “This might be my last fight.” Unfortunately everyone assumed that meant I was retiring but I never intended to retire that night. I have always said I would think long and hard about that decision before I made any formal announcement. However for the past week I’ve been reading career eulogies on every website and in every newspaper you can imagine. I’m extremely grateful that journalists (many of whom are my dear friends) have felt the need to write such moving tributes to me but please wait until I make the official announcement. I’m back in training and ready for my next fight. I want to let you all know that the Pocket Rocket could be back in the ring soon!

He should have retired after the Scott Harrison beat down 5 years ago, never mind now.

Yup, he showed incredible punch resistance that night & you could tell a few times the ref was ready to step in but he always did just enough for the ref not to. I remember one particular punch at the end that knocked his head right back & I'll never know how he stayed on his feet. He admitted after the fight that Scott hurt him as well.

Yeah, alot of people were hyping Harrison after that. Was an excellent performance...too bad he had to and lose to Medina straight after that which halted his momentum somewhat even given the victory in the rematch.

As for McCullough, he really needs to ****ing let go. If not after Harrison, he should have went out after Larios 1 which was a moral victory if nothing else. It's just getting embarrassing now.

It was a good win for Scott but the size difference that night was ridiculous. Scott looked like a welterweight in there. The Medina loss was a bad one but something that can happen to fighters who are not quite elite I guess.

I agree its getting embarrasing for Wayne. I dont see why he cant let go, he works well as a pundit & would make a great trainer. I dont see what he can hope to achieve by continuing to fight.

Yeah, Harrison was always a monster at the weight, baffled me how the hell he managed to get down to the FW limit.

Yeah, he's very articulate and rather likeable is McCullough and of course he has worked as a trainer before...he can stay in and around boxing in either of those capacities but I guess he just has 'Holyfield syndrome' and just can't get away from the rush of the big fight night...whether it's detrimental to his well being or not.

Lets hope he wins his next fight and perhaps calls it a day then, on a high.

I think Evander's recent financial problems have put a new spin on what we percieved as a dellusional desire to fight.

Harrison used to come down from welter to make 26. He was at that weight since he was 15!! He should have moved up years ago. Wayne though was a bantam fighting at the higher weight. His ear swelled up so much in that bout they had to lance it. It was a terrible beat down and he should have retired then. I fail to see what on earth his fighting on for and why he wants to risk his health and life for what would be a very small reward.

I completely forgot about his ear! After the fight it looked like something out of a cartoon. Maybe he needs the money Scurla, we don't know what his finances are like behind the scenes.

More like his wife is ****ing him in the ass. She`s his manager and has been since he turned pro way back in the early 90`s. Surely she has the cojones to tell him its time? The guy has a family and a very decent lifestyle.

Actually come to think of it wasnt Wayne banned some time back and fought for at 2 years to get his license back because of some anomaly found on his brain? The guys nuts.

Behind every great man & all that ay?

Yup he had a cyst on his brain that, after fighting hard, was ruled no greater danger to his health than if he didn't have one. Personally I find it hard to believe, but the BBBofC did eventually relent.
