Manuel Charr vs. Fres Oquendo Ordered By The WBA The WBA Championships Committee has officially ordered the teams behind Germany's Manuel Charr, who holds the WBA "regular" heavyweight championship, and Puerto Rican contender Fres Oquendo, who is number three in the WBA rankings at more than 200 pounds, to start negotiations for their fight. Both parties were duly notified on November 26 and must reach an agreement before December 22, 2017, or the fight will be called to a purse bid and both boxers will get 50%.
Just LMFAO at the whole concept of two old HWs who are not even top 50 fighting now for a world title shot. That’s pretty messed up. Slow Fres hasn’t even fought for over 3 years...
Oquendo hasn't lost in THREE years, if Joshua gets him in 2019 and wins he will have broken Fres's 4 year winning streak which would be monumental when we look at all of Joshua's accomplishments.
Hopefully Charr takes it seriously... Oquendo frustrating Charr to a close points win would make the division look even worse(just when you thought that wasn't possible)
Fine enough. The fight is trash but it will rid the WBA of their obligations to Oquendo and when Charr gets squashed by Joshua the whole regular belt mess should be solved.
Exactly - let it run its course. And more sensible still ... an Ortiz (who can apply to have his ban liften in March), Povetkin (if he thinks its a quicker route) or someone can fight the winner for an ok $, for a chance to take a sort-of title, and then do a sort-of WBA HW unification.
If he's not shot or close too it then he might win. The Oquendo that fought Chagaev would beat Charr now, but we don't know if he's still anywhere near that level. If he isn't shot then I expect him to win a decision, Charr is awful.
At least this way there won't be an opportunity for some LHW/Cruiser to swoop in and take the secondary WBA belt, calling themselves "Heavyweight champ" as insult to injury. But what will Fres age be at the time? Can he become the oldest guy to capture a Heavyweight belt? That would be bad too.
