http://wbanews.com/artman/publish/news/WBA_reviewing_Campillo-Shumenov_II.shtml The World Boxing Association will review Saturday nights controversial light heavyweight title fight between Beibut Shumenov and Gabriel Campillo in Las Vegas. Shumenov won a widely criticized split decision with Nevada Athletic Commission-appointed judges Patrician Jarman 117-111 and Jerry Roth 115-113 scoring in favor of the Shumenov, overruling WBA judge Levi Martínez, who had Campillo ahead 117-111. Unfortunately due to the Muhammad Ali Law approved by the American Congress and applied in the main jurisdictions where WBA world championships are carried out, they have the freedom to approve and appoint the officials of the fights, said WBA vice president Gilberto Jesus Mendoza. Im not trying to generate a controversy but our judges attend yearly seminars to reduce the possibility of controversy and to do justice in the ring. In this particular fight they only accepted Levi Martínez from the WBA. He added that a committee of international officials will review video of the fight in approximately the next 15 days
First time I ever heard of a board reviewing a controversial decision, it's about time! :think Only there's something about this one which doesn't make it completely fair if the verdict is overturned because of the nature of the bout. Campillo - Shumenov 2 whas there because Campillo won the first one in controversial fashion, so it had something like 'poetic justice' over it. If the verdict is overturned now, the sh*t hits the fan!
I actually sent an email to the NSAC regarding this fight telling them that their credibility was undermined, and that fans relied on them to ensure that the sport was free of corruption, and that this was especially important in title fights. I didn't get a reply but I did get a confirmation that they read the email. I'm happy something is being done. Here, the WBA is directly taking a jab at the NSAC, saying that they appointed incompetent judges.
Good. My worry is that they said they were reviewing Valuev-Holyfield and nothing ever happened. Anyway, Campillo was robbed of his title and there is no doubt about it. The least he deserves is a rematch.
Very good news...I saw the fight yesterday and i scored it 8 Rnds to 4 for Campillo...One of the worst robberies I've ever seen...
What can they actually do about this? I suppose even if ordering a third fight is the least they can do, it's better than nothing.
Who decides how the judges' panels are structured (ie one appointed by the sanctioning body and two by the commission)? Is that structure common, having judges from one source outnumbered by judges from another?
but what if they really overturn the decision in this case (is that even possible, should be though), how would Shumenov react!? Should be quite unfair... So he can be robbed in the first bout, but if the tables are turned suddenly actions are taken! :bart Don't get me wrong, it's far overdue with all this controversial decisions, incompetent judges. But with this fight there are some issues that need to be taken in concideration.
so as not to create a dangerous precident i think it should be changed to no contest. treat the ****ing thing like a mistrial and have a rematch. reversing the outcome will set a standard that no decision is safe and that creates more problems than it solves
Video really needs to be made widely available of the first contest if it exists. If that one was in fact a robbery, overturning this decision but leaving the 1st one untouched would be an even bigger travesty than either set of scorecards.
i was really glad to hear this. i had shumenov winning one ****in round of this fight. apparently (as noted by the TS) the WBA had only approved martinez for the fight. big surprise that the other two scored it for shumenov. jarman should be banned and roth should be suspended or suffer some kind of disciplinary action. the whole thing reeks of corruption.
What makes the most sense is to make it a NC and have them rematch for the vacant title, but i don't believe sanctioning bodies can change the result of fights, that is the role of the NSAC in this case.
Something good is being done for the wrong reasons. Campillo is a hispanic fighter and the WBA is Mexican-based, and has always favoured hispanic fighters. Hopefully they start reviewing ALL bad decisions in boxing, not just those of their favoured hispanic fighters.
