Does anyone know why on the same night that Kessler fights Ward for this belt, Sartison is also fighting for this same 'vacant' belt in Germany? http://www.boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=213976&cat=boxer
Yea, that must be it. I never understood the 'Super Champion' bull****. What exactly is the criteria? It just gets confusing because in Boxrec and fightnews schedule they are calling both for the WBA Super Middleweight Championship. :think
They made Kessler Super Champ so they don't need him to enforce any mandatories during the Super Six.
I thought they promoted a guy to superchamp status if he got another belt. Seems odd that they have done it now, its not like they couldnt consider the guys in the S6 good enough to be appointed mandatory as necessary.
WBA is trying to implement 3 "champions" for each belt. A Super, Regular, Interim champ. 3 belts = 3x the money
Kessler has defended his belt against the mandatory (Perdomo) 2 months ago, that should have been sufficient for some time, don't you think? But thrust WBA when you think there can't be more bull**** than it allready is, they sure as hell produce some more...
It's inevitable that they'll end up unifying belts at some point during the Super Six, so they did it now, so they can make more money off sanctioning fees. I'm not claiming their altruistic or anything, but it was part of the deal for Kessler to bring his belt into the tourney.
I suppose that KIND of makes sense from the WBA's point of view but IMO they should have waited until it actually happened. It also begs teh question as to what happens if an ordinary champ also goes and gets another belt, say by fighting Bute. Do they then have 2 superchamps and create another ordinary champ? That would be pretty ****ed up.
This nearly happened some years back at 168. Ottke held the IBF and unified the WBA after winning it from Byron Mitchell. I believe it was that year that the WBA introduced this Super champion fiasco. Because Ottke had unified the belt became vacant. Mundine fought for and won the subsequent "regular" WBA title. Had Joe Calzaghe fought Mundine he would have annexed the WBA and the WBO belt. Now what would have that made Ottke? The WBA Super duper champion? I dont even know what the WBA's policy is for their champions as it certainly doesnt make sense to have a regular champ and a Super champ holding both their titles in one division simply for common sense sake. Im glad no one else followed suit. But the WBC arent too far off with this Emeritus crap (champion in waiting bull****) and their Diamond belt.
I wish they would have told the WBA to keep there belt because when the tourney is over the winner will be the champ at 168. Well, I guess Bute would disagree but if he is still around after the tourney the winner should fight him. Either way, no one needs the WBA
