I was just looking at the rules and the rankings. Gamboa got the official tittle last October. Before that he was the interim champ. The rules say (IF I AM READING CORRECTLY) the mandatory defense should be no later than 120 days. Since then, the WBA has Ponce de Leon ranked as #1 challenger. Then, How come Gamboa is fighting #7 on his next fight instead of #1????? Not saying Ponce de Leon would beat Gamboa. Its just that I would prefer to see that fight rather than Gamboa fighting that padded record #7 argentinian guy.
because the wba has rules that apply when they want them to apply. wba regular champ wba interim champ wba super champ just how they have butchered the heayweight picture the last 5 years with ruiz,valeuv and chagaev fighting each other over and over...should tell you something
Gamboa isn't even the real WBA champ, that would be Chris John. Gamboa is the regular champ. This of course is a disgrace considering John is only supposed to be promoted to Super Champ when he unifies. The WBA just makes it up as they go along. Their rules are irrelevant.
The WBA have made a terrible mess. Kessler when going into the Super 6 was just WBA champ but because the belt would be tied up for a while they made him super champ and now the guy Kessler beat to win the vacant belt (Sartisan) is WBA regular champ when no belts have been unified. Awful. Its a belt that to me has now lost its prestige
