Realistically, there are too many vested interests and power brokers for that to happen.

The WBA and WBC originally arose (in theory at least) to do just that - global boxing organisations encompassing all major nations with a single set of rules, rather than what had been upto then a US-dominated power structure.

The lack of US influence eventually led to the departure of senior WBA figures to form the IBF, which was instantly given credibility by Larry Holmes adopting the title.

The WBO was the most bizarre. Some Dominicans and Puerto Ricans decided they didn't like the WBA and started the WBO. By all rights, and in any other mainstream sport, it was doomed to failure. A bunch of faceless no-marks set up a new governing body in an already saturated market without any significant backing either in terms of money or influence. They weren't recognised by the Ring or any of the other US mags, and their standard bearer was Francesco Damiani in a world inhabited by Mike Tyson. Against all logic and common decency, they succeeded mainly because Warren and Kohl could promote their titles as the real deal to British and German audiences, who either didn't know any better or didn't care. Eventually over time quality fighters were able to legitimise the belts to the point where they were interchangeable with the others.

If for arguments sake a single governing body was set up, wherever it was based it would **** off all the other groups, which would inevitably lead to splinters. Some of the splinter groups would succeed, as in the short-term they would make more money in a land of multiple titles than a single champion, and fans ultimately care more about the fighters and fights than they do the belts.

Virtually all governing bodies in all major sports are cess pools of corruption, but boxing is unique in how easy it is to set up a rival group of equivalent power. No matter how bad FIFA and UEFA are, it's inconceivable that (eg) the FA could leave and get a rival group off the ground in a couple of years. It would never work if the England team suddenly started calling themselves World Champions by beating a second-tier team and skipping the World Cup. That is effectively what has happened in boxing though, repeatedly.

I always had a feeling IBF was in cahoots with Matchroom, only because Darren Barker, Kell Brook won IBF titles under Hearn, maybe Froch as well off Bute ??(already had WBC before joining) I might be wrong on that though

They are all pretty bad of you ask me WBA are the worst film was by WBC then IBF and WBO are about level pegging.

It's why I'm so annoyed fans didnt get behind the WBSS more than they did. It was the best thing in boxing

Growing up I had always viewed the green belt as the more serious of all belts. It just seemed to have more prestige. Now though they're an absolute laughing stock.

I mentioned this in another thread, the name of the belt is the 'franchise belt', they're not even pretending to be a sports organisation anymore! They're a bloody franchise!

I wouldn't put it past them to let other organisation buy the rights to the name 'WBC'. We could end up with the WBC Nigerian world champion of all of Nigeria.

The WBC, IBF and WBO, all are ******* offspring of the WBA. Sure the brats may try and get their attention, but the WBA has seen it and done it all in nearly a century of crookedness, under the NBA and then WBA banners.

Look at it like this, the more belts the better. As laid out by BXNG101 it leads to more money. And the casual fan does not care. The hardcore do, but the beauty there is you are smart enough to know the best fighters, and who deserves to be called the best. You do not need a fighter to have a belt to see that.

Would not surprise me. Remember him being in a strop because he lost out in a run to become WBA president led to the IBF. The IBF was created for Bob Lee to be President...

It will always be my favorite sport, but this is nothing new....

The way they control fighters in this way is moronic, and I cant believe some fighters are still used in this way....

My advice to any up and coming fighter would be, don't bother unless you want to be on call for somebody at a phone calls notice.

Fair point - but a pearl belt? That’s just ridiculous!
