Francisco Lorenzo nearly took home the WBC interim super featherweight title on Saturday, though it woudn't be fair to say he won it. Lorenzo was getting battered through the fight for the title being vacated by Manny Pacquiao by ex-champion Humberto Soto on Saturday at the Mandalay Bay Events Center.
Soto was close to finishing the bout and was pummeling Lorenzo in the corner late in the fourth round. Lorenzo had already been down once and then voluntarily took a knee.

As referee Joe Cortez moved in, Soto threw one more punch which replays showed grazed the back of Lorenzo's head. Cortez halted the bout and gave Lorenzo five minutes to continue.

Lorenzo sat on his backside and then fell over onto his back after about two minutes and laid on his back as if he were in agony. After the five minutes were up, Lorenzo couldn't continue.

Cortez disqualified Soto at 2:43 of the fourth for the illegal blow, seemingly giving the win and the interim title to Lorenzo. But later, WBC officials huddled and decided not to give Lorenzo the belt. They ordered an immediate rematch.

"When you hit a man behind the head when he's down, that is a disqualification," Cortez said. "I watched the replay to make sure that's what I saw."

Not long after the decision, Lorenzo got up and paraded around the ring with his arms in the air.

"It was a good stoppage because I was hit in the back of the head when I was down," Lorenzo said."

It was one of the most outrageous examples of acting seen in a boxing ring in many, many years.

It was a diabolical decision. Joe Cortez is a disgrace, Keith Kiser is a disgrace . They huddled together whispering like 2 schoolboys caught smoking in the boys rest room. Those two are either corrupt or totally incompetant i know my own opinion on that.
Kiser says the fighter suffered a concussionafter being hit at the back of his head. Yet he was left TOTALLY alone while Cortez and Kiser conspired
    Both should go immediatel;y

Lorenzo is the worst actor I've ever seen..the way he kept grabbing at the back of his head . Doesn't deserve a rematch. Fight should be changed to an NC.

Cortez stepped in to stop it and then stepped out again, in the middle of the action - that was ridiculous. Also, Soto was in the middle of throwing a combination when Lorenzo took a knee. You can't expect not to be hit while you're down if you do that. The punch hardly connected. Barrera hit Marquez with a much harder shot than that. The whole thing was really silly. What a ***** move by Lorenzo.

Cortez said after the fight that "a punch while the oppoenent is down has to result in a point deduction or disqualification so I had no choice but to disqualify him". Why not take a point?

Cortez should be banned or not allow to officiate any important fights.

The DQ was total BS. Andre Berto clobbered Rodriguez with a much harder shot while he was down yet barely anyone has even so much as mentioned it.

Lorenzo acting all hurt was a disgrace to boxing itself. The result should be changed to a No-Contest immediately. I can't wait for Soto to kill this clown in the rematch with a proper referee.
