It was a terrible call but it was withen the rule. The WBC needs to give the belt to Lorenzo and order a rematch. I hated what stupid **** Cortez did but thisn't isn't the first time a win was awarded to a boxer for late hit, great acting. Instead the WBC is now pulling the we own the belt crap and we make the rule. That's horse ****.
Let me guess you came to that conclusion after reading that BS article by Kevin Lole on yahoo sports.
I think for a change, the alphabet body is in the right. Cortez had two options, he could either DQ the offender, or make a points deduction. It seems that these days Joe needs to hog the headlines and therefore often chooses the most controversial call. Not that this should have anything to do with it, but it seems harsh on Soto because he was about to stop Lorenzo. An immediate rematch is in order, with someone else in the middle.
No I haven't read the article. There was a small blurb at a boxing news site that the WBC won't give th ebelt to Lorenzo. Which is total bull. Yes its a bad bad call and Cortez ****ed up. The WBC can't change the rule after a match has already taken place. This is more sanctioning body bull****. Ofcourse Lorenzo is a disgrace and doesn't deserve the belt but thats not the issue here. The rule of the sport is.
Joe should have stopped the fight and declared SOTO the winner...im sure there wont be much violent reaction if he did that, because it was bound to happen anyways...What he did was egoistic. "..I'm frim!"
I hate to agree, but i think lorenzo should be awarder the belt. Only with the condition of an immeadiate rematch. I hate the decision but rules are rules, and i think the fight was a tko for Soto. But if you already disqualify Soto, dont keep bending the rules. If one man looses(in this case robbed), the other has to win.
I completely disagree, giving a belt to a beaten man on the canvas completely defeats the purpose of even having belts. They are supposed to signify the best in the division, not the luckiest.
WHAT'S THE POINT? Lorenzo is a BUM and giving him a belt that - 1. he didn't earn and 2. he's gonna lose as soon as he defends it - doesn't make sense at all
You guys are missing the point. Since when is the fight decided by the sanctioning body? The fighter, the ref, and the judges are the only thre who can determine a fight's outcome on the day of the fight. Its about the sport having rules and regulation. Its about the creditbality of the WBC. They can't just overturn any decision they want, especialy in this case. What Cortez did was withen the rule. It was a hit to the back of the head to a down fighter. AS weak as it was, it was still an ilegal blow. Any one with a decent brain would have just stopped the fight and given it to Soto. But this is Mr prime time Cortez who had to screw the fight. Like I said. Give the belt to Lorenzo, order a rematch, and yank Cortez from any more fights. Thats justice.
A rematch against Lorenzo would be pointless and frankly a waste of time for Soto's career. The WBC failed once again by displaying their utter incompetence, why not overrule Cortez's call and give the legit winner the belt!
Nah, a fighter shouldn't get a belt on a technicality. Rules are made to keep things in order but there are always exceptions in which following the rules won't produce the most just results. Things should always be looked at with the rules in mind, but true justice doesn't come only from regulations, it comes from examination and thoughtful evaluation of the circumstances.
Just my take on the Cortez call in the Soto fight. Even though I'm NOT a fan of Cortez, actually I don't really like him much at all, the REAL blown call here was that of the ringside doctor. Here's the deal: Soto DID tap Lorenzo while he was down, and Cortez ruled it a foul. Nitpicky, maybe, but it WAS a foul, whether it was damaging or not. I don't think we really want officials deciding who should be penalized for fouls and who shouldn't, based solely on whether or not they thought it was a damaging blow. It was correctly ruled a foul. The REAL problem here was the doctor making a determination that Lorenzo couldn't continue due to the blow to the back of the head, as well as his cuts. The doctor fell for Lorenzo's acting job. Had the doc CORRECTLY ruled that the blow to the back of the head in no way prevented Lorenzo from continuing, but that the cuts DID prevent him from continuing, then Cortez would have ruled a TKO in Soto's favor. But once the doc made his ruling, then Cortez' hands were tied, and he was forced to rule the DQ. I do believe that Lorenzo "got away with one", but the rules were followed here to the letter. My personal distaste for Cortez aside, he's not the bad guy here. The doc, and Lorenzo are. The doc, for blowing the call, and Lorenzo for faking an injury to get a cheap win that he didn't earn. With that being said, Lorenzo should get the belt, and the WBC order an immediate rematch (as they did in the Casamayor-Santa Cruz fight). We are really going down a bad road when the sanctioning bodies start ignoring an official result, and making their own desicion as to who gets (or doesnt get) the belt.
Is that a good thing? Should we be consistent in letting outcomes be decided by technicalities and bad calls by refs? Nope. Especially not in boxing where the sanctioning body has the power to decide who their Champions are. Either way, it's a lose/lose for the WBC. You say it takes away from their credibility to keep the belt from Lorenzo. But had they given it to him, they'd have a bogus champion and that too would hurt their credibility in people's eyes.
