Not sure if this had anything to do with it but Garcia was almost half way to being a welter weight. If the WBC decided that this wasn't a Jr welterweight anymore they may have made this ruling.
The whole match up I was ready to throw in the trash. Ryan defies the weight rules so that he could be in his best position to beat someone who is restricted by the weight rules. Devin is told by a WBC rep that regardless of the outcome he would still have the belt. Obviously it wasn't told to the media and/or commentators because the fight was announced as a Title Bout the night of and during the fight. So if one fighter knows he's champion even if he loses because his opponent missed weight.....then the other fighter isn't held accountable of the rules within the division and as a professional........... Why exactly are we suppose to be excited for this match up? Are we now allowing people to challenge champions of the division but be careless of the rules for the weight class and also not giving any consequence the champion in the event he loses? And now we have goofy fans talking about they want to see a rematch.....Nah. I'm good.
Not been on the forum for some time now. First thread I read returning was this one. It's an odd one. I like that new people are following boxing. Some still are on the basics - but all is good! It was an entertaining fight I thought. It didnt go the way I expected.
Not sure how old you are but this is hardly the first time a fight has come in overweight in a title fight.
And all those previous times where it was only the challenger who failed to make to weight, the bouts were declared non-title fights and the reigning champion retained his title regardless of who won the fight.
You make a very valid point there. Haney had to make weight otherwise win, lose or draw he would have had to forfeit his title. Garcia could come in as heavy as he liked and as we saw, he did.
LOL.....so reading this post made you think I was suggesting that this hadn't happen in the sport before? My age doesn't matter but I'll tell you that I've been an adult long enough to understand that I don't jump into the middle of a conversation expecting to understand everything discussed. I've pointed out already about the situations before in which this happened. But just because it's become a habit doesn't make it right. Especially when the rule changes depending on the situation and names involved. Back to the actual conversation: Devin now is to go into his next fight announced as champion with the loss in the back of his mind. Media will sell him as the current champion be we all know fans on boards/social media when go back to combating his current legacy. Not too long ago he was labeled an email champ before he actually fought in the ring and won a world title(s). To many fans, 3 lbs is not an excuse for his performance last weekend. He's clamored to be an elite boxer, defensively sound, and yet, he faced a man who is the definition of a "one trick pony" and that one trick was successful 9x that I counted. 5 of them put him on the canvas with only 3 being called a knockdown. Let alone the first time was less than 60 seconds into the first round.
Exactly. Funny how there are a lot of Ryan's fans who cried and whined about the weight clause that Tank held him to. Devin Haney wanted to give him free opportunity to be in the best shape he could possibly be in, within the rules and he purposely abuses it.... I don't understand why this isn't a talking point and no one in the licensed and/or "new" media addressing it. Not that the weight was a major factor or excuse for Haney's performance, but there are divisions for a reason.
I don't know what Garcia's weight was on the evening but he looked every bit as big as Haney to me. And Haney loses a **** ton to make weight. Not having to make those last three will make it a lot easier, so this isn't just some technicality. If you don't make the weight for the title in question you don't get to fight for it. End of. With that said, of course a rematch is needed to sort it out. Don't know if Garcia will be bothered, though. He makes money whomever he fights, title or not. This will have increased his market value even more.
The Idea that Haney should forfeit the title because he lost to a fighter who didn't make weight is ridiculous. As soon as Garcia missed weight the fight became a non title fight.
mauricio sulaimán is kind of a snake the Yvon Michel the promoter of quebec was super close friends. He will make lots of deals and probably is bribed super easily. I don't know about this Haney situation. the dazn panel kept saying the title was vacant if haney lost but I didnt think that was true ever.
