Haney is an overrated weight bully, but the fact is, Garcia was 3 pounds over the weight limit. Haney was within his rights to withdraw and then we wouldn't have had a fight to watch, because of Garcia. I don't know the rules but I think as Haney didn't lose officially he keeps the belt.
PS most of YDKSAB if you think 3 pounds is nothing. That is the hardest part. Haney kills himself to make weight, I honestly don't know what kind of stuff he takes to make it happen, but he was at a severe disadvantage.
I don't know how the governing bodies work these things out, but at the very least shouldn't Haney lose his champion status and the belt? I suppose that would make it vacant and then the top two ranked fighters should fight for it. That said, exactly how many belts were at stake in that fight? Initially, I thought it was just one, but then I had a feeling Haney had won other belts. Anyway, my point being, Haney should not be champion anymore as he lost. Just because Garcia can't claim it shouldn't change anything.
Well, I'm afraid I don't have much sympathy for a guy who cuts weight simply to make an arbitrary limit only to balloon up to the size of a middleweight over the time between the weigh in and the fight. Haney, should campaign at his optimal fighting weight and not try to cut so he can bully natural junior welterweights.
That's never been the way any of them have worked. Ever. Even way back when, when there were only two governing bodies it didn't work the way you are suggesting. Never has and likely never will. Once the challenger fails to make weight it is a non-title bout. It's that simple. End of story.
Lets exaggerate. Garcia comes in at 158, beats Haney and Haney should still lose the belt? It's exactly the same thing.
Through no fault of his own, Haney engaged in a non-title fight that was effectively in the welterweight division. He should, of course, keep his jnr welterweight title until he loses it in a title fight at 140.
No, I understand that. Definitely, Garcia shouldn't be champion. But, Haney lost...so he shouldn't either. That's why I asked about the possibility of it being vacant. I understand it wasn't a title fight, so one can say it's not right to take it off him...but, it just feels off to me.
That would never happen. Let me ask you, let's say Haney puts on 25 pounds between weigh in and the fight... should he be disqualified?
According to the article, allowing Haney to keep his strap was a change in usual protocol. Most expected the title to be vacated after Haney lost. https://www.badlefthook.com/2024/4/21/24136179/wbc-rules-devin-haney-will-keep-title-after-loss-ryan-garcia-boxing-news-2024
I meant, what would the social media reaction be like? Everybody would be freaking out all over the place if that happened LOL. This is true and has always been true, some people are not getting it.
This was what I asking earlier. I had assumed it would be vacated, but, apparently, it doesn't work that way because it wasn't a title fight.
When you look at it its the only fair thing to do. Garcia didn't make weight so he is not able to fight for the title plus Haney lost the fight so he's not able to remain champion UNLESS the fight was declared they were not fighting for the title in the original contract. & it was a non title fight But we know how boxing is run these days It was pretty obvious they wanted a Haney win. The referee was blatantly pro Haney.so who knows what they decide
