The WBC is weird. They will let Chavez Jr fight for that belt right now. If Floyd wants a crack at it cool with them. Cotto not complying...strip. Weird.
It's happened. The first one that comes to mind is a week before the Mike McCallum-James Toney middleweight unification fight, the WBA stripped McCallum because he wouldn't pay all the fees they wanted him to fork over.
In the Mike McCallum situation I just mentioned, he had to pay his sanctioning fee for the Toney fight, and a fee to the WBA for allowing him not to fight his mandatory AND a step-aside fee to his mandatory (Steve Collins) ... and McCallum just told them to go to hell. Plus, Cotto's purse for the Canelo fight is pretty high (I think Cotto is supposed to get around $30 million). The WBC normally gets three percent of the purse (or, in this case, around a $1 million). If they tacked on another three percent for making an optional defense, and another fee ... they could be trying to gouge him for $2/$3 million. Cotto probably just thought it was too much to pay just to carry their belt in the ring. They've just got their hand out. They aren't actually doing anything for the money.
sorry...I don't judge fighters based on alphabet trinkets...I judge them based on competition and performance you guys can get all excited about this wbc belt.....the wbc stripping cotto here changes nothing for your crush ggg.....cotto held it because he did what he needed to do to secure a 20+ mil payday...and he brought the belt to this fight ggg can fight for the vacant belt on hbo for 2 mil against heiland....it will do nothing....hell still be stuck defending it against nothing...you guys seem to think beating Hopkins record and defending that mw belt over and over is going to enhance his standing......"but nobody can duck him anymore"....yup...and you are right "nobody"...because that's who hell be defending it against.....
Whats so weird about it? If you dont pay the sanctioning fees you get stripped, those are the rules. This is a win win for Cotto. 1. He's more than likely to lose against Canelo anyways so why fork over a chunk of his fight purse to the WBC....... and 2. If he should win, he doesn't want to face GGG anyways, so its better for him to be stripped of the title and not have anyone tell him who to fight next.
It might be as simple as all that. But it might not be. We don't have all the info. I do know that the WBC has been a shill for certain fighters at times, so I would agree that it is weird that they'dput themselves in this position before the fight. Then again, as said, we don't have all the info.
Obvious Cotto won't fight Triple G. So I think of he wins he'll move down and hope Floyd in-retired for a mega fight. If Canelo wins- I think he and Triple G will reach an agreement for one bout each in interim and have a mega fight one year from now.
I am fired up..i love boxing...and you guys call legit hall of famers cowards...yet you give ggg a pass for everything and anything cotto is a career prime 140/147 guy....hes at the end of his career and cant cut that weight so hes moved up .....and you guys are calling him a coward for not wanting to fight a career 160lber who has chased fights at 168....that's the strange times were in here cotto got a fight against the 160 champ...the 160 champ agreed to fight a cw...because cotto is a star and brings that money.....cotto seized his opportunity and won...and he held that belt and secured another 25mil in purse money over two fights....because that's the kind of star and boss cotto is...... ggg will be fighting for relative peanuts on hbo for that wbc trinket...enjoy.... you guys are calling a prime career welter a coward for not fighting a guy that has chased fights at super middle weight......cotto was no more obligated to fight ggg than ggg was obligated to fight ward..... why was cotto obligated? because he held some trinket that the sanctioning body let him hold?
long count.....stop stating the obvious....you aren't saying we haven't known or I wasn't willing to acknowledge awhile ago....he was never going to fight ggg and any of us with sense knew it....
lol shoe......so do the math 800k spent - 300k saved is 500k....now what did cotto make for geale? WHATS COTTO MAKING FOR CANELO? cotto is making 22 mil or around there for this fight........so who is the dummy?
We Be Croks strike again so Canelo can become MW champ yet isn't even ranked at MW ..That's awesome atsch
He already forked over $800k for GGG to step aside. That's the only reason the belt is on the line for Cotto or Canelo this fight He could've just fought Canelo or GGG instead of Geale Cotto chose f*ckery though.
Cotto made the further mockery out of the sport (as if it needed any help) for his own gain at others' expense and you're not even prepared to dish an ounce of criticism for that. It says it all.
