Tue, 15 Jul 2008 LOS ANGELES, California The guessing game and confusion is finally over. World Boxing Council (WBC) president Jose Sulaiman Chagnon, in a statement released from Mexico City on July 14, has ruled that Humberto Soto might fight (Manny) Pacquiao for WBC super featherweight world title, with (Franciso) Lorenzo fighting the winner. This will only happen, explained Sulaiman, if Pacquiao decides to relinquish the WBC lightweight division title and keep the WBC super featherweight title. Sulaiman confirmed that Pacquiao still holds the WBC super featherweight belt he wrested by the skin of the teeth from Juan Manuel Marquez on March 14 at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas even if he has already annexed the WBC lightweight crown by knocking out David Diaz on June 28 in the same venue. Below is Sulaimans complete statement in a press release issued by WBC News: Regarding the WBC interim super featherweight world championship fight between Humberto Soto and Francisco Lorenzo, the WBC Board of Governors has voted for the following: 1. The World Boxing Council officially confirms its decision of NO CONTEST, which was rendered at ringside on June 28. 2. Soto and Lorenzo must fight again, after the time that Lorenzos medical suspension by the Nevada Boxing Commissions medical board has ended on December 26, 2008, with an updated thorough medical examination of Lorenzo, and the commissions approval for him to fight. 3. Due to the length of Lorenzos medical suspension, Soto will be approved to fight for the title if that fight is before the end of October, which is about 60 days before the end of Lorenzos suspension. 4. In spite of our friendly relationship with Lorenzo, the WBC is imposing on him a fine of $2,000 (U.S.) for his unsportsmanlike actions in the ring which were successful in influencing the referees decision. The WBC will not allow this type of behavior to become an example for losing boxers who try to win on unethical and false pretenses. The $2,000 fine will be donated to a childrens hospital in the Dominican Republic, the home of Lorenzo, with the donation handled directly and personally by the Dominican Boxing Federation on behalf of the WBC. 5. The present double WBC world champion at lightweight and super featherweight, Manny Pacquiao of the Philippines, must announce by July 28 which title he has decided to keep. If he decides to relinquish the lightweight division title and keep the super featherweight title, Soto must fight Pacquiao for the WBC super featherweight world title, with Lorenzo fighting the winner. The WBC Board of Governors believes that its ruling, expressed above, is the least controversial possible. This is the official decision rendered by a majority vote of the Board of Governors, to which I am fully committed as President. I would like to have the liberty of expressing my personal feelings, as well as my feelings as WBC president, that Humberto Soto has been the victim of one of the most unfair decisions that I have seen in my 57 years as a boxing commissioner, which have been devoted to a life-long struggle for justice. The world saw his tremendous performance against Lorenzo for the entire fight. However, I respect the WBC Board of Governors ruling, done in the spirit of justice, for the least controversial and best solution of this matter. I would like to finish by expressing my deepest pride and honor to be a part of the exemplary, perservering and passionate group of people integrated in the WBC, who are totally dedicated to the sport that they love without receiving any compensation.
No more guessing game . . . this is very clear. If Soto is fighting Pacquaio . . . it should be at 130 NOT 135. I don't think Pac is going back down to 130 . . . so Soto vs Pac is out of the picture.
pac can relinquish the 130 belt and will let soto move up to fight him at 135 so this fight still can happen. imo, soto would not mind moving just to have a date with pacquiao. but i hope you are right that this fight is ****ed. i just don't see the rewards of pac fighting someone who is a guzman's leftover, no disrespect to soto but it is a fact. it is good that the soto-lorenzo fight was declared no-contest. it is justice for soto and lorenzo who acted like a fool after a fine acting job. though wbc should have followed the official ruling, most people would just let it past since this is a popular move for them.
Pacquiao vs Soto is still in question right now, but if they do fight, I hope it's for the 135lb title.. I don't see Pacquiao moving back down to 130 and if he did, it would be a bad move seeing as how he would have to fight Lorenzo after.. There are way better things at 135.. This shouldn't be a hard decision for him..
As much as I like for Pac to fight Soto, I don't think this is gonna happen. Pac won't relinquish his 135 belt just to hold on to his 130 one. He's got bigger and better things to do at 135 than staying at 130 and have a couple of fights there(one of which is a waste).
It's clear that WBC said that if Pac should fight Soto it's should be at 130 not 135 . . . and Pac won't go down to 130 just for that. So the Soto/Pac fight is highly unlikely at this point. ****i'n Arum is just playing with our brains.
. . . yeah better things . . . better money at 135 and besides Pac is already having problem making 130 so what's the point?
If the fight has to be at 130, then I doubt it'll happen.. Not only is there anything for him down there, he'd also have to drain and starve a lot while at 135, he's a beast and seems much more comfortable.. So Pac has to go down to 130 to fight Soto and he's waiting on Valero's medical reports.. I'd prefer a Soto fight over Valero any other time, but Valero is willing to move up to 135 so I'd take that one.. If Arum was ****ing with our heads and a Pac/Campbell fight was announced, I would cream my pants :bbb All we know right now is that there will be somebody in the other corner of the ring come Nov. 15..
Arum is clearly ****ing with our heads. WBC said that Pac will have to announce by July 28 . . . which belt he would vacate and retain . . . so there's no way the Soto fight would happen. On another article it says the Pac team prefers Valero at 135.
Isn't there a possible matchup against Valero being made right now too and if so, what's up with that?
Everything are all just talks as of now . . . but among the names Soto seems to be the most not likely with the release of this article from WBC.
is the wbc really that dumb to think that pac will fight soto at 130? sheesh. pac will never fight below 135 ever again. i thought he made that pretty clear already
Nopes . . . WBC is just giving Pac a choice and a deadline. Yes it's an open book that Pac already declared he won't go back down to 130 where he is having problem trimming down to the limit . . . WBC just need an official declaration from Pacquaio. It's Arum who is dumb . . . by insinuating a possible fight with Soto.
