WBC's Sulaiman Wants To Reprimand Donaire-Montiel Referee

It was a weird stoppage, but not a bad one. In a way it was the best the ref could do, because if he stops it immediately, people would say Montiel didn't get a chance. But with the way Donaire cracks, you kind of shiver to think what happens if he gets in another combo with full power at that point.

 

It was impressive how he got up though, If he was somehow able to khan himself to the final bell I think it a champion like montiel deserves that kind of respect by atleast giving a small chance, in my eyes the ref did a good job because he stopped it right after he had seen montiel take 2 shots without properly defending or firing back.

 

Even Roy jones Jr. at ringside said Montiel handled the final two shots pretty good. i was there at ringside for the fight. It was amazing that Fernando was able to get up after that left hook. You could hear the punch land 11 seats from the ring !! I think he should have been given the opportunity to fight on !

The ref-Russ Mora did the right thing.

He gave a chance to Montiel to continue, because inn Russ Mora's past fight that he refereed, he was highly criticized for not letting Freddy Hernandez continue after he was dropped in the 1st round against Andre Berto.

Russ Mora doesnt know what Montiel was planning on doing after the knockdown, cause alot of fighters do different things, anything from grabbing/holding, voluntarily go down(like Cotto did with Margo), tripp down on purpose, or anything to "buy time" to recover.

Thats why Russ did the right thing in letting Montiel continue, and stopped the fight at the right moment, when he knew that Montiel could not defend himself.

Im surprised hearing Jose Sulaiman make noise about it, cause he has never complained about any other referee's stoppages in other fights.

 

Some people want boxing to turn into a *** sport.

 

He gave him a longish count then asked him to raise his hands to him, which he did himself, he was clearly still in cloud coocoo land, the ref should rightly be reprimanded, it doesnt matter if Montiel is Champion or Challenger.

 

The only thing I can say in the referee's defence is that when Montiel's leg was twitching, I think he was showing Donaire to a neutral corner, therefor didn't see it. Even so, Montiel, after falling down whilst trying to get up, didn't seem to respond well when the ref was speaking to him.

Montiel getting to his feet was nothing short of heroic but, in situations like this, the ref has to save a fighter from himself. He's there to ensure the safety of both guys and nothing good can come from letting a fighter in Montiel's condition continue.

Suliaman is still a **** though.

 

When a guy gets knocked down, the ref will ask them some simple questions when they stand back up. They do this to see if the guy is ok to fight. More to the point it is to see if a fighter has enough of their wits about them to defend themselves.

I thought that the ref asked Montiel a few different things and he failed them all? That should mean that Montiel didn't have enough wits about him to defend himself.

I know a ref can also see a fighter up close, and can see how their eyes are focusing etc, but I think it is fair to ask him the question why he didn't stop it when Montiel couldn't respond to his prompts.
(Or did he? Was there something I missed?)

 

Ref needs a refresher seminar. Montiel didn't raise his hands nor walked towards him. He could stop the fight right there according to the rule book.

i was surprised he was allowed to continue when he got up on the count of 9. I think Montiel surprised EVERYONE that he actually got up within 10, in the first place. When you see a fighter get stretched out and kickin around, oh yeah, its over. Somehow, he had a miraculous will to get yourself up, which is a sign of a true champion. Unfortunately, he was not in shape to fight obviously, and though giving the champion the benefit of the doubt, i think the ref would take back his decision.

Though he was exposed to "possible" danger, he wasnt injured by the extra 2 punches, or he wouldnt still be standing after the wave off. Now, if Montiel WAS severely injured, there should be repercussions, but he wasnt. A good verbal and agreement to better judgement in that situation is satisfactory.....

 

Back in the old days that was a normal KO.

 

I just looked at the knockdown on youtube, and when Montiel got up, the ref came over and stood right in front of him and asked him something......the clip has Montiel's back to the TV screen, but it looks like Montiel thwarted his gloves outward at his waist and said something to the ref......

.....the ref then did the customary swipe of a fighters gloves when they get up from a knockdown and let the fight continue.

I dont see a damn thing that the ref did wrong in this circumstance, even if he had seen Montiel's leg twitching, it twitched momentarily and when Montiel got to his feet he was steady on his feet.

The only thing I would have done differently (and thats assuming if I had seen the leg twitch, which this ref may have not) is to instruct Montiel to take a step toward me.


Sulaiman it seems is making an ass of himself once again to deflect some of the criticism of him letting unranked fighters fight for championships.

 

The truly sad part about it is there are "boxing fans" who cheer this ****. The refs stoppage was PERFECT, and he should be APPLAUDED. It's nice to see a ref not panic and actually let a fight go to its NATURAL conclusion for once! Today's boxing fans and officials are mostly feminized wimps who don't appreciate boxing for what it IS, or should be!

 

the fight should have been stop but wbc is the last person that should talk crap.
