Tough one for Timbo. Can't say pushing him into a fight with Charlo is what I would be doing but I wouldn't have put him in with Horndog so we'll see. What is meant to be is meant to be so if Charlo elects to face him, so be it. From an entertainment / excitement point of view, seeing him in with Charlo will be a much bigger deal than seeing him contend for a vacant strap against Liam Smith so maybe rolling the dice isn't such a bad decision after all. If Junior's chin has some Siberian steel in it, maybe he can do something. Certainly if he lands on Charlo even a fraction of what Castano did he will be in the fight & can do some damage. What I don't like is the timing of the fight. Charlo's coming in off 22 rounds against the second best light middle in the world. Timmy's coming in having yet to face a genuine top 10 guy. I don't like that. What I do like is a kid with 35 domestic amateur fights under his belt & 21 pro fights having managed to work his way to a shot at the Undisputed Light Middleweight championship of the World (if it happens). Didn't think I would get to see that after Kostya Tszyu & Vic Darchinyan (fight for an Undisputed championship, that is). Could be about to see two do it in the one year.
Yeah Tim and his team have done a great job. You never know Tim said this is his Zab Judah moment we might see Charlo do a rendition of the famous chicken dance. "Chickity China the Charlo chicken" The song writes itself.
I don’t think Jermell will have any issues going to 160. I mean aren’t him and Jermall basically the exact same size? I know he hasn’t necessarily “grown out” of 154, but he comes into every fight looking very lean, and he’s a taller guy. It won’t be hard to add 6 pounds to his frame; if anything, it’s just less water he has to cut. Plus he’s pretty much accomplished everything at 154 by becoming undisputed. I’d say he probably wants to enhance his legacy by going for some belts at 160. Spence is definitely huge for a welterweight. The main thing I care about is getting the Spence vs Crawford fight; I just don’t want Spence moving up to 154 to put further strain on that fight happening.
My point is Charlo weighed 152 last time. He's been a pro for nearly 15 years ... a really long time. He's never weighed 156 for any fight. He's a natural light middleweight. It's his weight class. He's not a big guy. Some middleweights barely make weight and shoot up to 180. Charlo is on the small side. For a middleweight, frankly, so is his brother. It may be this grand PBC plan for them all to move up simultaneously. But grand plans don't always work out. Spence may be ready to move up. He's fought above the light middleweight limit and looked good. But neither Charlo has ever fought at the max weight of the next division. And the guys who are drying out and barely making that max weight before ballooning up by the opening bell are who they will be facing.
That’s interesting that Charlo only weighed in at 152 for the Castano fight. Do you happen to know what he actually weighed on the day of the fight?
No, but I can't think of a junior middleweight champ who came in so light for a defense so late in his career, other than Terry Norris. We're nearly 15 years into his career. He isn't struggling to make weight. He just unified everything. He's the world champ. He can finally get same names to fight who are moving up from Welter. Clearly, he's not struggling with the weight at all. Neither is his brother. Spence fought a non-title fight at 156, over the junior middleweight limit, years ago. And he looked good at the weight. If Jermell had fought one non-title fight at or above the middleweight limit, like 162, and Jermall had fought once in a non-title bout at the super middle limit, like 170, I could see it. If they were struggling to make weigh to defend their belts, I could see it. But if you have all the belts in a division that's just picking up and will add more names in the next year, why the hell leave? So you can fight for your brother's and Golovkin's leftovers, like Sulecki? Stay the world champ at 154. Fight Tszyu. Wait for Spence to move up. Wait for Crawford to move up. Wait for Ennis to move up. That all sounds much more exciting. They may all call themselves brothers, but it's not a team record. Each one has his own career.
All good points; I think you’ve actually convinced me to agree with you now. Do you know who Spence fought against at 156? I didn’t realize he’d ever fought above welterweight (or above junior middleweight for that matter).
Thanks! I actually remember watching this fight; I either didn’t realize or just forgot it was fought at 156.
