I think with all titles it is the champion that makes the titles. Off the top of my head the fighters that I recall having the WBO belts defending or unifying -

De La Hoya - SFW & MW
    Cotto - LWW & WW
    Calzaghe - SMW
    V & W Klitschko - HW
    D Haye - CW
    Pacquiao - WW
    Barrera - SBW
    Hamed - FW
    Hopkins - MW
    Taylor - MW
    Williams - WW
    Martinez - MW
    Pavlik - MW
    Eubank - MW & SMW
    Collins - MW & SMW

All these fighters have been considered dominant champions or key players in the division they were fighting in

And who considered Klitschko to be a legit HW champ in the 90s?

Historically it's not as prestigious as the other 3 but because all sanctioning bodies are complete ****, it is every bit as good as them. You can point to any number of rulings made by each body in the last number of years and realise that they are all corrupt. The really sad part is noticing how the IBO is starting to gather momentum.

It was originally mean to be an honor given to a WBO champ who had defended the title ten times (eg Calderon), but then they decided to make the winner of Pac/Cotto a super champion as well for no apparent reason, so it's now just another meaningless alphabet title.

Like I have said before, and we can argue until the cows come home, but the Ring title is the only meaningful title out there, unless a fighter unifies all 4!

I agree Ring title/all 4 or a combination of that is quite compelling to say "who da man"

But it can also depend upon who is the champ like JMM and Pacman

I remember when it came to DLH his WBO belts were claimed to be legit world titles. That was around mid 90s.

Around the same time Hamed and Barrera helped make it more credible with their double digit defences of their WBO belts.

By the time the legend Joe Calzaghe made his 20+ defences it was already seen as one of the four major belts.

I'd say around mid 90s to early 2000s.

It didn't. The other three devalued themsleves until they were all equally ****.
