or even Riddick Bowe winning it from Hide in 95. So as Formidable said mid 90s to early 2000s.

Naz Hamed and Calzaghe did a lot for legitimatizing the WBO belt. :deal

Edit: DLH also did a lot for the WBO did not mean to leave him out.

Bowe vacated the title after a few months. How did him winning it make it legit?

I'm not saying anything is set in stone, I'm just considering when very good/elite fighters won a version of it. Him dumping it does nothing good for it but he did fight for it in the first place.

Good for you, but I don't remember anyone else making that claim.

The fact that elite level fighters have won certain belts does not make them legit in and of itself. By the same logic, the IBO and IBA should be considered to be the 5th and 6th major titles because fighters like Lewis, Klitschko and Mayweather etc. have held them.

a few elite fighters compared to many elite fighters, but I can see your point.

Wasn't always relevant but it has been made retrospectively relevant. People win might not have been seen as legitimate champs back then, are viewed as legitimate champs now. Akinwande was never seen as a heavyweight champ at the time, but history recognises him as one. Wlad was never really seen as a champ when lewis was, but history recognises that he was.

Hard to say really because hamed was seen as a relevant champ and that was years ago.

If you examine the list of WBO beltholders, you will see that, next to the EBU, they have the best P4P champions:

    -Juergen Braehmer
    -Robert Stieglitz
    -Dmitry Pirog
    -Serhiy Dzinziruk

While I do not agree with the mandatories for Dmitry Pirog and Serhiy Dzinziruk, these professionals are far better fighters than the beltholders that belong to the IBF, WBA, and WBC organizations, and is second only to the EBU as far as recognizing true talent.

Who says it is? Seriously, not long ago. They are still the least respected of the big four.
