The CR and SMW wssb tournaments are looking very promising and exciting and it got me thinking about having this type of thing in every division. I know its very unlikely with promoter and broadcaster politics and a range of other factors but it would be great to have a number 1 in all of the divisions and see all the best fighters fight each other, Who does everyone think would be the #1 in each weight?
The plan is to do two weight divisions every year, which (ignoring strawweight) means a division every four years. Of course the hope is they're true best on best every time, and the pinnacle of the sport and every boxer's ultimate goal and focus. Here's who I'd pick to come out of best on best top eight tournaments in each division right now... Ortiz Usyk Ward Degale Golovkin Lara Spence Crawford Garcia Lomachenko Frampton Rigondeaux Yamanaka Inoue Nietes Tanaka That's just who I think the best boxer in each division is. We'd have to know the draw, and when boxers actually are forced to fight the best the limitations of guys we think are great could be exposed, and there's the possibility that some guys could rise to the occasion and score a couple upsets in close fights, like a Horn following a Pac win with a similar win over Thurman. Of course skill will remain most important, but I believe if tournaments and better matchmaking is the norm form and intangibles will be more important than it is in the mismatches we mostly get now.
HW: Joshua* CW: Usyk LHW: Ward SMW: Smith** MW: Golovkin LMW: Jermall Charlo*** WW: Spence LWW: Crawford LW: Garcia**** SFW: Lomachenko FW: Gary Russell Jr SBW: Rigondeaux * I’m assuming Fury is still retired. ** I make Smith favourite for the current tournament, but I think the best at SMW is wide open. *** He’s moving up, so if not him then his brother or Lara. **** Not sure if he’s just taking this money fight vs Broner or is moving up permanently.
This is excellent. A division getting covered every 4 years sounds pretty good, too as the landscape usually completely changes every four years.
i agree with all of them apart from: ortiz - completely untested and looked poor in last 2 fghts GGG - Simply because i pick canelo to beat him on points Frampton - i'd pick selby and cruz to beat him again
yeah if they can get the top fighters in all divisions like they have done for these 2 then its just what boxing needs, could be great if they get the majority of belt holders etc in all the divisions that they do this tournament for.
I could see Russell and Valdez beating beating Frampton and taking it. I still like Frampton, and definitely favour him to beat Santa Cruz again. Featherweight would be great next year. The top 6 at least are so well matched.
