WTF is this? http://www.britishboxing.net/news_3814-Alphabet-belts-the-scourge-of-modern-boxing.html Hopefully the guy who has just bought Man City will buy it and close it down :rofl
It was a good article actually, made me see the bigger picture from a different viewpoint. But I still stand by my original thought - why the **** do you need more than one world champion? This isn't the Paralympics where you need different champions for each event based upon a number of variable factors - in boxing you would have one 11st man vs another.
True, but then someone else would emerge as soon as a new champion gets enough public support for his claim. ... My idea is allow the Ring to decide and record all the champions. Pay the ring a small sanctioning fee, they appoint there own judges and refs... everyones happy.
:good Great call. That would give boxing a massive boost and put it back amongst the mainstream sports.
Great idea. Shame Goldenboy owns the Ring magazine. I do not trust the ratings in that magazine anymore. Wonder how long it will take for the editor to be told to be favourable when making the top 10 lists.
how good would mit be if there was a Abramovic of boxing, who bought the WBA, WBC, IBF and WBO and a few of the other bull shits, and orderd all the champs to face off until there was 1 champion.
Rob but your comment automatically gives the alphabets the credibility they don't deserve. You're basically saying: If you own a WBTrinket you are in the box off. In the mid 90's I probably knew 55 of the 60 champs but now it just doesn't matter.
well dont buy the bull****. its the tv companies and the promoters fauly. warren single handadly got the WBO to where they are.
Hatton gets absolutely ridiculed for his WBU days - but the fact is that he was young, and ploughed through 16 opponents in under 4 years. It's not like he stuck there for a decade (some did WBO etc). Three and a bit years - 16 opponents - it was more of an apprenticeship. Still not great though on the grand scale of things...
I think he gets ridiculed for the fact that there was a bogus title on the line in every fight. If some of those fights were 'international ten rounders' or chief supporting bouts without the stupid title nobody would have much to say. It is the fact that common sports fans were conned into believing the likes of John Bailey and Michael Stewart were world title challengers!
That Michael Stewart fight was actually an IBF eliminator, unfortunately 'no joke' was a bit of a joke as far as that level was concerned. Stewart had managed to go 12 with Sharmba Micthell by just managing to survive and he did actually have a decent record at the time. He had wins over Terron Millet, Ivan Robinson, the already mentioned Bailey(and another 3/4 guys better than Bailey) with his only losses coming to Mitchell and Dorin Spivey on a split decision. However anyone who had seen the Mitchell fight would of realised it was a total mismatch. Stewart didn't show Hatton the same respect he had shown Mitchell and rather than spoiling from the start he tried to fight with him. He got dropped twice in the first round and then went into survival mode. Realising that he was going to lose like this anyway and still probably going to get stopped he tried to fight back again in round 5 and was dispatched easily. A complete mismatch but because it was an IBF eliminator you could say it was a neccesary one.
I think the fight should have been stopped in the first round! I think people's gripe with Hatton during the WBU reign of error was the fact that the competition level reached a plateau, with Phillips and Tackie pretty much one after the other, then instead of moving to world title level it was bums like Vilches and Pedersen - neither of whom would have beaten the leading domestic fighters at the time IMO.
Wasnt it hearns or haggler who wasthe first WBO champion!!!! So to say warren got them to where they are is a little naive! WBO world champs have included de la hoya, barrera, chris byrd, both klitchkos, gerald mclellan, Cotto, tapia, Darius Michaelzechki <sp>. Warren didnt get them where they are, it appears he had far more influence in getting the WBU where they are though. "WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING" sells tickets, so the fragments will continue.
Why do nt we start a fund and buy out the wbu,and rename it the EBF and run our own sancatiionong organisation !
