This actually happened in weight lifting. They removed all records and made totally new weight classes so they can start to break records again. If I remember right the year was 1992. Like I said in my earlier post the best totals ever are still from 1980s. Yurik Vardanyans total of 400kg in 82,5kg class from 1980 olympics seems to be unuchievable even in bigger 85kg. weightclass nowadays. New WR in 85kg class is 394kg and in 77kg class it is only 380kg. So you can easily see that lifters were much better 30 years ago than they are nowadays.

This has to do with stricter drug testing policies. Guys like Vardanyan,Rigert,Alexeev, Taranenko etc were juiced to the gills without much fear of being caught.

That is right. It was the reason. Testing was not as good as it is nowadays. It is why shot putters, hammer- or discus throwers were also better in those days than they are now. But in pro boxing there was no testing for steroids at all in those years. Not until late 90s or something like that. So you were able to inject whatever you want even in the very same day you fight. And most probably all the best fighters did that from late 60s till late 90s. Who wouldnt if it is not even forbidden and you can benefit from it.

It actually isn't Chambers (who in fact wrote the Queensberry rules) but the Marquess himself, a friend of Chambers' who lent his name & endorsement to Chambers' rule set, John Douglas.

He was pretty famously homophobic. (not without reason, his son was seduced into a very seedy lifestyle by Oscar Wilde - leading Douglas to essentially declare war on Wilde and ultimately ruin his career, leading to his depression and health failure and shortening his life...)

    You missed the point.
The game has moved on MASSIVELY since 1970.

Comparing a team from 1970 to an equivalent level in 2014, is almost like comparing apples and oranges

And football (soccer)team from the 60 or70's would struggle against a championship side. Look at how slow it was back then and far less tactical and poor defending. Now the better players are often marked out of big games amd fitness levels are much higher. Those teams from the past would be exhausted within 30 mins vs current teams

And ive watched it for over 20 years and I agree with nothing you said.
This years World Cup was played at almost an amateur level. Germany were the only team that stood out , that doesn't mean 1970 Brazil would not have blitzed their way thru the rest of the competition because they would have, easily.

You mention how the game has changed but ignore how its changed for the worse.
Its only faster because you can't tackle anymore.Top Players are protected. Attacking at top level is pretty much outlawed , so what you have is a running game.
Because the game has become a lot more defensive does not mean the skill and talent did not exist in the 70's , 80's and 90's because it did , it just was more about passion play and not solely about money like it is now.
Football is not what it used to be and anybody who was there from the 90's on will attest to that.
