No personal attacks in my responses there, and none intended. No need for it to degenerate into anything like that, I assure you. I just don't see these answers as having any meat to them, is all. I haven't yet seen an example of anything specific to prove that modern training has bettered fighters' performance. "Strengthening of muscles" has no direct connection to the application of boxing-specific tehnique and betterment of the science or art form of it, or however you want to phrase it. At best, it's a nice component to have before you start actually learning about how to box, but nothing more. No one is against strengthening muscles. It just doesn't necessarily have anything at all to do with teaching better boxing.

Again, no personal attacks are intended here, and apologies if you felt they were inferred.

Yes, that's exactly what we're saying. Boxing has NOT progressed. It has, in fact deteriorated.

The idea that athletes might have progressed over the years has nothing to do with boxing and is a different argument. Surely you must see that ALL sports are inherently different and demand different skillsets, training, etc. Why would you automatically lump boxing in with baseball or basketball or sprinting? That assumes a sort of osmosis effect, and that simply isn't how things progress and develop.

...which is amazing, by the way. If there was a Lounge still I'd have already made a sticky thread about it.

Because people don't know any better and buy it anyway. Why do we buy the crap we eat instead of things that are better for us? Because that's what's there.

Good point. Also, one is constantly trying to beat the previous record. If you were the one who made the record, there is no record to beat. If the record was 9.9 then, Jesse would have probably beat that. Also, like you stated, give him better footwear and surfaces and get better times.

In 1936, Jesse Owens won the Long Jump with a jump of 8.06, in ancient footwear, while doing a run-up on a slower surface. That same jump would have earned him a 5th place finish at the 2012.

Great athletes exist in every era.

Agreed. Why does Tyson have a "?" on his tracksuit and what's the deal with that talking pigeon that likes porn?

The life they lived was tougher, and that in turn made them inured to pain, tiredness, discomfort etc.
Ever see the hands of a bricklayer, farmer or fisherman? They have hands like shovels, hardened and toughened far more than the hands of an office worker, due to the life these people live. Day in day out all their lives. Training Sessions won't do this for you, no matter how "scientific" they are.

Everything was heavier and harder years ago, even driving a car. We had no smooth gear changes, no power steering etc everything was muscle powered!

Owens was a freak of Usian Bolt proportions in his day.

The difference between 1st and 3rd in that event was 32cm!

He wasnt exactly typical of his time

No seriously, what do advances in nutrition and sports sciences even mean?

    Team logo.

Apparently he used to be human but his ex-wife Sandra placed a spell or curse on him (this is based on the very limited backstory provided by Pigeon himself, and since he is what you'd deem an unreliable narrator who really knows?) after which he gained employment in the MTM squad, with Tyson having a notorious affinity for pigeons.

He is voiced by the inimitable Norm MacDonald.
