Better athlete does not equal better boxer. Fact.

But, he was still of his time, even if he was a far greater athletic talent than most (if not all) of his contemporaries.

In much the same manner, a fighter like SRR or Louis would likely excel in today's era, based on the footage we have of them. They were still of their time, but it's apparent that they had would have had the ability to compete with just about anyone in our time, given the manner in which they pass the eye test.

Again, every era is capable of producing freakish talent. And that talent shouldn't be dismissed because it was produced in another time.

I am not going to turn this into a Pacquiao debate over whether you like him or not. History will say he was one of the best fighters of his generation, as is Mayweather.

I mentioned Pac more to do with how he has moved up through 8 different weight divisions, meaning modern training, dieting and naturally a freakish athlete has managed to do this.

Fighters of yesteryear were better overall. Imagine if they had roids, supplements etc. They were much tougher outs than some of the chumps today.

When people say old fighters or fighters of "yesteryear", when exactly are they talking about??

Talking about the 70s and up, I can understand their argument.

But no one is going to convince me that a windmilling Jack Dempsey would get within an asses roar of world level in this day and age.

But David Haye talked his way into a title shot, At least with Dempsey he was credit as being a great fighter at one time.

I dont think Haye was any bigger than Dempsey (But i could be wrong)

I gotta say I agree with you on this. Like I pointed out earlier, some athlets from 1980s would be superior compared to todays athletes. But same cannot be said about athlets from 30s or 40s. So I think that Leonard, Hagler, Duran or Tyson would still be champions if they fought today. But Dempsey or Jack Johnson definitely not.

Today boxers are more gifted athletes, but it has few to do with nutritions or training techniques.

Boxers in the '70s were lazy and undisciplined, Frazier was a small ball of fat, blind from one eye, and drammatically weak, Ali was a fat ass that used to skip entire training sessions in the training camp, and had troubles cutting off soda and junk food, Foreman was totally raw and unskilled and also had no stamina in spite of being lighter than peoples like David Haye.

And today you still have a lot of boxers that are lazy and undisciplined, exactly like in the past.
Calzaghe and Hatton snorted coke like there was no tomorrow.
Young Wladimir didn't gave a **** about skills training and partied hard.
Floyd Mayweather lives of hamburgers and sweet drinks and his camps are weed parties.
Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. eats like a pig and smokes everything that burns, and he still beat various good phisiqued boxers.

I highly doubt someone like Alvarez has a balanced diet, he probably gorges on burritos and tacos, but he kills himself in training.

Today's fighters are just genetically better, due to a bigger talent pool and higher competition.

In the '70s, you could be 5'10, weight 205 lbs with an hanging beer belly and flaccid little arms, blind from an eye, unskilled and with no reflexes, and still become heavyweight champion of the world. (This is what frazier was, for those wondering )

What a JOKE of an era :scaredas:

even??? even the guy who got wiped out in seconds by a near 38 year old retired neverman?? and then hid in fear from this retiree until he died????

even the worst champions in history never did that.

you need a serious reality check.

    Are you joking?

Jack dempsey, 6'1, 187 lbs (!!!!) average shape

    https://www.google.it/search?q=joe+...of-jack-dempseys-loaded-gloves-part-2;645;836

David Haye, 6'3 (like Ali), 220 lbs, greek god phisique

    https://www.google.it/search?q=joe+...mag.com%2FKRAZE-Athletes%2Fdavid-haye;415;372

David Haye would have obliterated Jack Dempsey :-(

Just watch their respective footages, in spite of being so much bigger Haye is way faster, more coordinated, hits harder.
