i may go to iceland this year.

Free-time, is it some kind of business trip or pleasure? Because depending on which my reccomendations would be different to suit.

The list is endless. I'm gonna go on a rant here because it bugs me but personally I don't think taking the uber touristy routes are that great or the best way to experience Iceland because a lot of the hidden gems are not near the city and the lazy ass tourists miss out on a lot. I'm not saying that from a snobbish POV either, but there are a lot of places where you have to get out there yourself and explore where the coaches will not go. Thats why I'd always reccomend that people hire a 4X4 as its really the best way, maybe the only way to reach the most beautiful spots and its not difficult to do due to the fact there is really only one main road in Iceland that goes around the entire coast in a circle so with a bit of common sense its simple. Then there are tons of roads of questionable quality coming off it that head into smaller places, the countryside, the glaciers etc, thats where armed with knowledge from locals like me the best places are found. To me thats what Iceland is all about, there is a fantastic company that rents out really good 4X4's that can be slept in. It sounds a bit rough but the hotels are basic as hell here anyway and ridiculously expensive for what they are, people never realize that until they get here. The bottom line is the more adventurous travellers get a lot more out of Iceland, there is an amazing diversity of natural beauty but it won't all be found within 50km of the city.

If its just a casual trip or on business Reykjavik Excursions is probably the way to go. They'll go to the usual places like the geysirs, Gullfoss waterfall, the Þingvellir national park which is the home of the mid-atlantic ridge, fissures, lots of interesting landscape around there. Typically this is done in one day, its called the Golden Circle. Another typical thing to do is to head to one of the nearer glaciers, and do snowmobiling or some ****.. Then the average tourist will go to the Blue Lagoon which is about 45 mins from Reykjavik and bathe in the geothermal water there. It is very expensive though, think its about £25 last I went but its kinda worth it occasionally. One thing I'd highly big up is Jökulsárlón in the south east, its a glacial lake and its really beautiful to see icebergs floating around, not sure if they do excursions there or not because its a mission to get there. If you're a bit of a trekker the mountain 'Esja' overlooks Reykjavik, its easy to reach and a fairly easy if tiring walk but has great views over the city and beyond on a good day. It's a similar climb and height to Snowdon. There are whale spotting trips from everywhere, another common thing tourists do. I won't go into the north where there are so many great places, they require a 4X4.

As for Reykjavik itself, the old downtown area is quite nice and has a good coffee shop/restaurant type culture. Make sure to pick up a hotdog from the stands downtown, they're the self-proclaimed best in Europe or something. Even Clinton had a hotdog there. The nightlife is pretty rowdy too, especially in season.

 

I would have preferred James Pond as a Mod.
