On a Hatton/Khan fight: "From my point of view Ricky shouldn't be fighting - it's not good for boxing and it's not good for him more importantly," Warren said at the conference. "He's just been in hospital for whatever that was. Financially it's a fight Amir would do really well out of but Ricky would get stopped again. I don't think he should fight. If he wants it I'm sure it could happen but for his health he should definitely retire." Without a doubt, we can agree Warren isn't primarily concerned about Ricky's health. But is it: a) Reverse psychology: tweak Hatton's pride by suggesting Khan would bust him up and start to get into his head, leading to the big payday. b) Excuse to keep Khan away from a potentially dangerous fight. c) Good cop/bad cop at the bargaining table - Roach is for it, Warren against: gives the message "we're interested, but you need to talk us into it." Thoughts? [I lean to b). I expect at least a year or two of milking this success before they think about tackling the true 140 top dogs - note that Salita is the WBA mandatory (at least according to their website)]
Reverse psychology, Warren would love nothing more than to have his star fighter end Hatton's career.
if hatton came to frank tomorrow and said he'd fight for him i guarantee he'd accept. has warren got the balls to do a no options fight against ricky hatton. :deal i say no way in hell. :nono
Just for more attention from public. thts the biggest money fight out thr and Im sure they both know this and they both want this
I voted for b) Excuse to keep Khan away from a potentially dangerous fight, but it could be any of the three. Saying Hatton should retire makes it difficult to say that he would make a good opponent any time in the near future, unless Hatton has another fight first or something. It sounds more like Warren just doesn't want the fight rather than that he's trying to drive a hard bargain or goad Hatton into fighting.
truth is warren doenst have the confidence. he doesnt want to risk his cash cow. but then agen hes thinking the promoter point of view and you cant blame him for that. its a shame warren isnt very good with the technical side of boxing like roach who clearly see's soming in khan to want this so bad
warren knows he ain't gonna build bridges with team hatton. and no way is he gonna be happy with a one off fight. :nono he's gonna want options and that ain't happening. i would be very surprised if this came off with warren involved in the promotion.
I agree, Warren isn't going to want to risk Khan without having some gaurentee that he'll have the winner of the fight afterwards for a couple of fights at least and when he knows that wont happen I think he just wont want the fight. Even by Warrens standards it would look a bit silly to say Hatton should retire and then try and promote him after he won (if he won, and if Hatton would agree to options, which he wouldn't).
Why would Warren want options on Hatton? Even if he were to beat Khan his most likely next step would be to retire so as to go out on a high.
Unless Warren is prepared to take a back seat there is no way this fight can happen. Frank has done nothing but slag Hatton off since the day they split - one minute he could be a global superstar after beating the great Kostya Tszyu, the next he was just a lucky guy who beat up on an old, completely shot opponent. Clearly the truth lies somewhere in between - it was clear that Tszyu wasn't at his best, but he was hardly shot to ****. If he was really so shot, how the **** could he have coped with 11 rounds of a real fast paced fight. There is so much revisionist history about this fight - people tend to forget that Tszyu outboxed Hatton throughout the middle of the fight and beat the **** out of him pretty much throughout - and vice versa.....
