Larry was hella exciting!! He would throw down and exchange when he could be content jabbing to victory like Wlad. Holmes was the ****ing man, these noobs have no clue. H2H Lewis is the only fighter that beats Holmes and it's close to 50-50
Compared to either Klitschko, or today's Heavyweight scene in general, Larry Holmes was Heavyweight Cocaine for excitement. I would rather watch a poor Holmes title defence than the best Klitschko bull**** you could muster.
Lots of ignorance on this thread. Some of you guys really need to sit a few plays out. Stats/facts don't lie.
Lol. Holmes didn't have enough power to keep some of the other ATG's at bay. This should be clear as day if you have any boxing knowledge.
You've answered your own question. Era's aren't about size, they're about skill and competition. As far as todays era goes....the fighters now aren't any bigger than 20 years ago. Just fatter with less skill and stamina. Your point about body punching may be true in a sense, but it still goes to show skills have eroded. Since we're specifically talking about heavyweight you don't see fighters feinting, parrying or slipping punches in order to set their opponents up anymore as much either. They'd rather back up. hold on or block with their arms. NONE of that lets you create opening for counter punches.
You obviously don't have a clue. Ole' man Holmes went 12 hard round rounds with prime Evander Holyfield and prime Oliver McCall. Ole man Holmes also beat a prime Ray Mercer easier than Lennox Lewis did.
lol you're talking about the Holmes who said that Marciano couldn't carry his jockstrap?..the same Holmes who drop kicked Berbick with a move that would make Brett Hart jealous? Holmes was many things. but shy and soft spoken wasn't one of them.
the 90s were 20 years ago. That is when it became Lennox Lewis time. It was also the time we wouldn't see "true cruisers" anymore in the HW division. (people who weight in under 200 lbs) or middleweights who compete for the title.(Except Roid Jones, but he is gifted and a cherry picker) Ali's era and before were smaller. Also fat isn't perse bad, it is for example Haye who is a gasser. It has to do with conditioning. And fat gives some punch resistance. Ali also wasn't the leanest guy around anymore in the 70s.
Haven't watched this fight in awhile, but my recollection is that Ali was toying with him rather easily until he got cocky and lazy, and was hammered. He was up at the count of 3 and totally destroyed Cooper the next round so any "would of or could of" situations are for naught.
