I say this because, simply, times have changed. They say that people need all those fights (75-200) to have the experience, and "seasoning" to beat any opponent, to be able to adjust. And also ive heard grumblings that people are only fighting up 2 maybe 3-4 fights a year maybe.

1st point is that back then there were no such things as "Game Tape" to study or just not as much as there is today, so they were going into every fight learning on the go just about. And to add on to that, the sport wasnt even 50 years deep give or take, so there were no such things as "naturals" who already had some of the reflexes and feel for the sport so they would need more fights than the fights that you see today (30-60)

On the second point, the "Golden Age" coincidentally was also right inbetween the Depression that meant they were doin this as a means of living, if they didnt, they were homeless, so of course they were fighting 10-20 times a year because it was just like a 9-5, they dont fight, they dont eat. Then you saw that once the depression ended, they fought less because 1)we had the birth of "naturals" who were able to adjust and have a mindset for the game to be able to adjust much quicker than earlier times so they didnt need to fight 100+ fights to get a feel for it and know how to adjust to a different style of fighter. And also, with the times and the fact that boxing doesnt have a retirement plan, or pension like say the NFLPA for the NFL, they have to have other outlets in life, you know "back up plans" for what they do outside the ring, and to be honest, they have a life too, they have family, they wanna be able to have an offseason to cool down and enjoy they're life. It isnt like during the depression when this was all you could do to get any money, they have a lot of things like college degrees, or talents in other areas too that they have a knack for (manny pacquiao in congress for example)

Plain and simple things have changed and some people saying that boxing is dead or a shell of its former self really just have a very hard time accepting the fact that times have changed

    COMMENTS SUGGESTION?? all are welcome:hat

boxing was just so much more popular back then, they had many times the amount of fighters in the golden era(s) that means more trainers more gyms wich of course translates to more fighers who had the "goods".

I think what you said about the depression is true hard times makes great fighters. if the american economy collapes the silver lining will be boxing will probably enter a new golden age.

with no money though lets hope we get to see it for free.

As if America is the only country that can make great fighters. People living in most countries in the world have tough lives compared to Americans. Maybe future generations of top fighters will come from India or China the same way eastern Europe has had a wave of top fighters in the last decade.

How the hell can you say you'll "never see a golden age again"? You can't foretell the future or can you?

The TS wouldn't acknowledge another golden age because he probably lives in the past, like much of the classic forum

I think we may see it again.

Boxing is in a slump, for sure, but to tell the truth, I work in a lot of gyms, 13 to be exact, and I train a lot of fighters(worked with and for the last 5 US Olympic Teams), and I haven't see gyms this full of youth(Under 18) in 15 years.

And they aren't all that bad. I think in another, say, 10 years, we're gonna see the ranks repopulate in a big way.

Unless I'm just involved in a massive anomaly in USA Amateur boxing, we are years away from a big resurgence.

Exactly. USA's dominance may be waning, but boxing in Europe is at a high. Maybe countries in Eastern Europe are pumping out quality fighters. These next couple of years will be buffe runtil we have a great new era.

when did I say that, but hey if the American economy collapses maybe it will bring down your countries economy along with it and then we both will see a influx of boxing talent:bbb isnt the global economy great!

Neither the economy of the US or the UK needs to collapse. Future boxing talent can come from Asia, Africa, South America etc. Boxing isn't baseball or American football, its an international sport

It wouldn't surprise me if Pac's success has a huge impact on boxing in Asia. And Latin America is churning them out, just as they've always done I'd guess.

Some odd responses here. Almost as if what we should be looking toward is a new depression, that'll make it all better! Man, you guys really love your boxing.

I know, I'm misquoting and oversimplifying, but that's the tenor of this thread.

For me, any semblance of a "Golden Age" has no dependence on whether or not the fighters amass 100 fights. That (or any other arbitrary) number means nothing to me........I'd just welcome in a new era that features weight classes with one champion and good, regularly televised matchups. That'll work for me.

Just seein' the words "Golden Age," P89,....wish I could turn back the clock, with a card every night of the week in N.Y., and the Neutral Corner bar jammed with the fight crowd.

But, at least I have my memories, and they're VIVID.

no i said that as too mean the golden age that everyone (mainly the old boxing afictionado's) talk about, we just wont ever have the same circumstances like we did when it came around.

On the other hand if we do have another golden age it will be a different one, hopefully a richer one, where like instead of ppl doin it to survive they do it cause its very fun. We could probably see that if like there were 10x as many Boy's & Girls Clubs across america with boxing gyms in them and we had it on regular television like Fox & CBS
