I think Jim Jeffries reigned during a relatively weak era. His top rivals were faded versions of Fitz and Corbett along with a lot of men who would have been super middleweights in a modern era. The era that spanned from the time Tunney retired to the time when Louis took over as champ was lacking as well.

Those are some names and some are even great names... but the greatest were opportunistic old men and/or light heavies who knew they had a chance against the contemporary weak crop of true heavies. Let's be realistic.

Archie Moore 188 pounds, 39 years old.
Ezzard Charles, 187 pounds, 34 years old, went 10-14 after fighting Marciano
Floyd Patterson, not really a factor during Marciano's reign
Harold Johnson, like Charles, a great light heavyweight but this is a discussion of heavyweights.
Jersey Joe Walcott, 39 year old at the end of his line. Had to get 50 title shots to secure a victory. A nice story and great guy.
Bob Baker - a solid run during 1950-55 but couldn't quite get to the top. A fight with Marciano would have been interesting.
Roland LaStarza -who again did he beat? Some B-rater New Englanders? He's merely a fluffer for Marciano, boosted in legacy to make Marciano look more formidable.

I disagree about the klitschko's dominating. they've feasted on a lot of underwhelming fighters who are soft seem intimidated from the get go.

you can never be sure, but in an earlier era where the fighters had to fight hard to get noticed and keep the checks coming, they would challenge the brothers more, and for any other of their drawbacks the k's lose when challenged.

no one in the last five years has had the guts to challenge them though.

So, all the heavyweights today lack guts? Ever care to tell an active heavy that? I know a few you could talk to.

Nobody saw it that way at the time.

The feeling at the time, was that Jeffries was beating other great fighters.

That's true. And I can't argue that this was not the perception at the time.. But when asked "which era's were the weakest", one can only achieve a response to this question by drawing comparisons. There may very well have been other champions who coasted through less competitive periods. But Jeffries' title reign was worth a mention.

You're twisting what he is saying.

Savarese fought Tucker and beat him but was scared shitless of Tyson. He's saying no one is going in there to really hurt them because they're intimidated. He's right with all the padding going on these days.

    Understand.

    A) What in the holy hell are you talking about? Savarese never fought Tucker.

    B) I think what he is saying is fairly transparent.
