This is without putting forth any real organized thought or doing any research, but if I were to choose a candidate for weakest time frame in heavyweight history, I think 2003-2006 would be as good of a guess as any. Lennox Lewis left the sport in 2003 after beating Vitali Klitschko who would soon join him in retirement. Wladimir Klitschko had just gotten humiliated by Corrie Sanders and would pick up an additional defeat to Lamon Brewster the following year. John Ruiz had just been outboxed in one-sided fashion by a past prime Roy Jones moving up in weight. Additionally, there were no real promising young talents coming up with the exception of Sam Peter and we all know how that turned out. Crazy as it may sound, Chris Byrd may actually have claim to being the best heavyweight from 2003 to the time he would lose to Wlad in the summer of 2006.... Thoughts?
It was a mess, many considered Vitali no1, but that was far from proven, allot thought Wlad maybe done. There were some good fights that never happened, Toney snapped his ankle, people thought Tyson could have another run for the title and he may have nicked a title if he fought Ruiz/Byrd in 2003. And Messi/Guinn/Audley were all being hyped up
True, but as for Vitali he was basically done by the end of calendar 2004. We still had another two years of **** ahead of us by that point. There were no promising looking hopfuls coming up in the division and the only attraction was a 7 foot circus freak who couldn't even look half way impressive against fading versions of Larry Donald and John Ruiz. The Peter vs Toney fights were horrible as well. Things are starting to pick up again, a little bit. Wlad has established himself as a reasonable force in the division. David Haye moving up along with Vitali coming back may spark some growth as well. Alexander Povetkin may offer some hope for the future and we still have one undefeated titlist in Ruslan Chagaev left, who I'm not expecting much from, but might make a good win for someone else on the horizon.
2003 to now is the weakest time frame I have ever seen in the heavyweight division...in my opinion, of course. And I can remember heavyweight boxing all the way back to the 1930's.
Current era's are never appreciated.... if you're going by a three year stretch, then there are plenty of candidates. If we're talking about a decade, then i'd go with the period around the 20's, when the heavyweight talent pool was so weak that half of it's contenders were lightheavies, plus all black fighters were closed out from the title.
the weakest era in documented heavyweight history imo is 1870-1880 before john l. the fighters were all old and washed up and the fights were decided by mob rule.
Without a doubt its 1929-1936. By 1928 Tunney retired and there were no heavyweight title fights in 1929 or 1930. In 1929, the top rated guy was Stribling. In 1930 it was Sharkey. There was a title fight in 1931, Schemling won it via foul when Shakrey hit him low. The Sharkey won the re-match and lost the title to Carnera, who who lost it to Baer, who lost it to Braddock. There was a game of musical chairs with the most prized title in sports. The talent level was low until Louis came around to clean up a medicore lot of mostly washed up x champions in 1937.
The worst time in heavyweight history is now. There are few fights between the division's best, and hardly anyone to market. Wlad's defenses are so weak that his brother is rivaling him as the sport's top heavyweight after only two fights in almost 5 years.
Take the Brothers Grim out of the equation and I think its as poor right now as it has been in my 60 years, maybe even worse than the 30's.
The Kilts are the only good fighters right now imo. I dont see why people belive Haye and others would beat the brothers. He is going to end up either ko by Vk, or out box and hug by WK.
I disagree. There was some great talent in the heavyweight division 1928-29 with 2 hall of famers in there prime george godfrey and jack sharkey thirsting for a title shot, and max schmeling on his way up. Tunney retired because I believe he had cold feet. He publicly refused to fight godfrey, and sharkey sweared on his life until his death gene ducked him. 1929-36 had alot of very good depth, unfortunetley alot of the top black contenders were shutout of a title shot. fighters like larry gains, george godfrey, tiger jack fox were all championship worthy fighters. Sharkey and Schmeling were both world class great boxers, and I do believe both could defeat tunney. Max Baer was the most ferocious puncher to come out of heavyweight division ever, he was a preclude to george foreman. I think there was talent. 2003-2007 was by far the worst. After that...theres not one which stands out
The division is looking alright now. Both Vitali and Wlad are looking to dominate, as they would in several other eras. You have Povetkin, one of the most decorated amatuer-turned-pro heavyweights in history. Chagaev is still unbeaten and looking good. Haye is the second best cruiserweight of all-time, so is a legit heavyweight contender.
