Thanks for the insight bruh, one thing I do get is that the Philly Shell does have some vulnerability to the left handed punches....and I also agree that fighters that are light on their feet can have success against the Philly Shell, which is why I feel a Khan vs Broner fight would be interesting being that Khan is light on his feet and can pop in and out with his flurries.

Funny thing is that Leonard strategy when he fought Floyd Sr was similar to what you said in 'key is to hit what you can' and that's what Leonard did by pouncing on Floyd Sr. forearms to the point where he dropped his guard which allowed Ray to punch his dome.

Definitely, Khan has a sharp jab, good hand-speed, and can dart in and out pretty quick. If he keeps his hands up and stays patient I see him out-boxing Broner, even if his power carries up.

Weaknesses, but a guy would have to be highly conditioned, smart, have a physical trait, or a combination of those. The opponent simply being taller with more reach (and fighting like it) would make it harder to utilize the shell against them.

Jab - A strong jab forces the a person in the shell onto their back foot

Doubled Hooks - Doubling hooks disturbs the natural rock of the defense

Mixing Hooks and Straights - Straight punches can shoot through, but most guys get focused only on alternating left/right hooks

I think the most deciding factor of the Philly Shell is that only the smartest, fastest, quick reacting, best timing having, and tall/long reach for their weight class having fighters deploy it. It is more about the user than anything the attacker brings. The fighter good enough to throw up a master level Philly Shell would probably starch his opponent equally as well with a traditional guard.

If you dont have the reflexes and speed for it, the philly shell defense is suicide.

A stiff jab and a straight left hand from the southpaw stance seem to be amongst the best ways to penetrate it as well.

Overhand right works well against it

True. But that flabby version of James Toney(who pulled a Mike Tyson and started believing in his own hype by not training properly for his fights) was merely a shell of his best in that fight. I was young then but even I easily noticed from watching James training that he had alot of loose skin flapping away while he moved.

well if a guy using floyds defense cant hold his grown vs a hatton or rios type fighter that can be there weakness. but if u can hold ur ground its pretty much flawless. u can throw single body shots an they will land but once u throw a couple to the body u will get countered. and anything to the head u will get countered. if used correctly . there guys like floyd and broner who use it well . then u can go all the way down the list to vernon paris. also berto wen he tried vs guerrero . berto wasnt strong enough to hold his grown and guerrero attacked relentlessly and berto couldnt handle the pressure. guys like floyd can handle the pressure but sense he is gettin older i can see he if having trouble wit guys bringing the pressure . he still easily wins the fight but just not as easy. cotto and ortiz really brought it too him n made floyd work .

also if ur not in shape it obvisouly wont work so if u can bring a guy in the later rounds n hope hes not in good enough shape and it wont be effective anymore

I'd say the Cus D'Amato system can beat Mayweather's defense. Mayweather doesn't like inside fighting that much and a Cus D'Amato fighter almost always fights on the inside whilst still having good defense.

This is what I love about a prime Mike Tyson so much. He fights on the inside, gets knockouts, and still had an impeccable defense. The fight was exciting and he wasn't getting hurt.

Most times to not get hit, you have to sacrifice knockouts and rely on judges not the Cus D'Amato system. The best of both worlds.

No way is Mayweather primarily an inside fighter.

Broner's shell and defense is not as good as Floyd's.
