I think both of you have points.

The way I see it, Mikey has prepared himself a 'shield' strong enough to withstand the power of this weight class, but he doesn't have what it takes to go out on offense. Because of this, he was forced to hide behind his shield for the whole 12 rounds. He did try to find his way out of his opponent's bombardment, notably by using his timely counter, but it was proven to be futile. Even at his full defensive mode, Spence was still able to land some good clean shots. If Mikey went on offensive recklessly, the result would be more devastating for him. For that problem, personally I think Mikey has taken a step into a level beyond his optimum competition ground. The feat of Manny Pacquiao is not something that every boxer who originally comes from lower division can equal on anyday.

The fact is dude Mikey was too small. It was like a Lion and Lamb. He asked for that mauling, nothing he could have done but turn over and take it.
