I know he's just won and this is stupid early. But the UFC are closing in on NY. Weidman is bigger than Anderson and has good wrestling. Jones and Weidman are both from/based in NY. Could having 2 local champions fighting at MSG be too much of a event for NY to deny?
What happened to Dana's big announcement regarding St.Pierre?Out the window.Looks good on the *******.
Horrible match for Weidman. People either over estimate how big Jones is or they underestimate it. He's a big dude. Much bigger than Weidman. And he ragdolls grown men that are much bigger than Weidman. Jones doesn't have a decorated wrestling career because he pretty much jumped into MMA. But his highlight reel speaks for itself. He's a phenomenal grappler, huge, rangey...it's a death sentence for Weidman. He has no tools that would out do Jones' tools. Also a horrible business decision for the UFC. They want to build the Weidman brand and legacy. They don't need him to get crushed by another champ so soon into his championship career.
If the fact that it's two NY fighters helps NY sanction the UFC it is a good business decision regardless of the outcome. Weidman is bigger than Anderson and has better wrestling so I personally believe the Silva Jones fight is more of a mismatch. Silva has better striking than Weidman (although not on Saturdays evidence) but worse everything else. But don't get me wrong, I think Jones takes this fight easy. But Weidman with 10 fights can come again without it hurting him too much. I wouldn't be thinking about these guys fighting if they were from different states. I just think that Two belt holders from NY could be a factor in getting the UFC into NY and MSG in particular.
Toughest opponent he's faced by far. Look for jones to go for the takedown and GNP from the top. He wants none on the feet with Gus.
If Jones can take him down and GNP from the top then he isn't a tough opponent. No one outside the HW division is a tough opponent for Jones.
