It was brought in to ensure fighters were more healthier on fight night, some time in the 80's I believe? Although, it's probably nothing to do with safety and more to do with making sure the fight happens, if they still did same day weigh-ins then fights could get cancelled...costing the promoters lots of money.

Not sure why though, just seems a advantage for some who gain huge ammounts of weight....like Gatti vs Gamache

I don't know about doing the unofficial weigh-in before fight night. I guess the 90s when HBO started doing it. The change from the official weigh in going from the day of the fight to the day before was in the 80s after Mancini-Kim and the aborted Spinks-Muhammad rematch. Kim dried out and was said to be weight-drained before he died. Muhammad failed to make 175 for the rematch with Spinks, and the fight was cancelled. Promoters lost money, and people still argue over what the REAL reason was for the change. Maybe both were reasons. Incidentally, Mancini-Kim is cited as the reason for the change from 15 to 12 rounds, while others still maintain that money was the reason for that change (12 rounds plus intros and interviews is easier to fit in one hour of network TV than 15 rounds)

Flip Homansky, who was with the NSAC back then, was one of the guys who led the change from same day weigh-ins to the day before. Now he prefers the old way.

There was a youtube clip floating around showing the Spinks-EMM re-match weigh-in, that's the leading contributor to the switched day weigh-ins since EMM refused to make weight and the fight was scrapped altogether

I think it should be on the day of the fight, and fighters that come in overweight should get a couple of hours to drop the pounds, if they still overweigh the limit, fine them big time. People gaining weight after the day before weigh in is a unfair disadvantage i believe.

Draining weight for the weight in and putting it back on over night must be pretty bad for your health anyway.

Interesting, I thought they made it a day before so fighters wouldn't be dehydrated on the day of the fight since it can be dangerous.

    Good read:good
