I hate this term, it’s used as an excuse for why the bigger man beat the smaller man. As far as I’m concerned unless the fighter doesn’t rehydrate, every fighter outside the HW division is a weight bully. They all trim down in weight to make the weight limits just some guys do it better. I give credit to any fighter who can take off a lot of pounds and perform at a high level, same way if they get wrong they have to take the L and move on up. Thoughts?
Contract says you make a agreed weight limit at designated time and day, you achieve that then you are good to go, all is fair, no bullies involved.
The fact that a fighter can rehydrate and gain a large weight advantage prior to the fight is an intrinsic pitfall in the "day before" weigh-in system. As long as the loophole exists, guys will take advantage of it. The only way to avoid it is mandatory "day of fight" weigh-ins with an allotted amount of weight a fighter is allowed to put back on, or we go back to same day weigh-ins, which posed enough of a dehydration risk that they were done away with in the first place. "Day before" weigh-ins are perceived to be the lesser of two evils really. "Weight bullies" are really just guys who are taking advantage of the weigh-in system's deficiency. They are, however, participating in a sport where every possible advantage is extremely valuable, as long as it can be legally obtained. While we as fans want to see these guys compete on an even playing field, in boxing that is definitely not always the case, or even a viable option. I'm not saying it's right or wrong. It is often an unfair advantage that a smaller fighter more naturally suited to the division must overcome. There just hasn't been an ideal solution posed as of yet.
Thank you, if you think about it let me take of 30lbs off someones favourite fight and see how they perform with guy who make te weight more comfortably. They would likely be slower, lethargic, weak, they wont probably wont be winning titles against top opposition.
There are some very good practitioners, until they lose and claim they were weight-drained. Jamie McDonnell being a fine recent example...
I feel you, but why is it unfair for the smaller man? doesnt he get the luxury of not having to do alot to make weight, not having to starve and dehydrate himself. Its a trade off, you can either fight at a division closer to your walking around weight and eat and train abit less viciously on weight cutting side or do the opposite.
They **** me off, I actually watched a mini documentary before the fight and the guy said he added a nutritionist and S&C coach which has meant he shedding the weight better. He is making excuses the fact of the matter is Inoue is a better fighter full stop.
The 26llbs he added overnight expressed as a % of the total body weight he took into the ring was taking the ****
If fighter states they were weight drained then they first were damned foolish fighting in that physical state, secondly if you were weight drained then keep it to yourself, it your decision to do so, and lastly you are risking bringing the noble art bad publicity, if you should get seriously hurt or worse. That said, boxers and their team will always seek ways of getting any advantage they can, even if it has risky consequences.
I can see where you're comimg from but I do disagree. I think the term fits, in fact I think plenty of fighters depend on being the bigger guy.
The whole 'doesnt have to drain himself' usually doesn't compensate for being the smaller man. There is a reason fighters kill themselves making weight classes they dont belong in. Its because for as long as your body can handle it, its a significant advantage. If it wasn't, it wouldn't be as overwhelmingly prolific as it is, and in every single combat sport, in every area of the world. It works until it doesn't (usually age and abuse makes it harder to get away with). But smart fighters will move up before the benefits of draining get overshadowed by the drain.
How is Canelo a weight bully? Crawford is moving up a weight division to take on a huge welter weight. Any claims of him being a weight bully have been wiped clean. Why isn't GGG on the team?
