If work remains this slow, I may even make a line graph. :-D

...oh, and that is strictly counting males. Female boxers would take five seconds to count but are not worth the bother. Let's ballpark that between straw and heavy there are like...200 of them?

I actually did this a few years ago. (it's all of four minutes of effort, really, some mouse-clicks and speedy tabulation, no fuss) It might be fun to dig up that old post and compare the numbers then and now, and see if we are on an uptick or steadily hemorrhaging young blood to other sports globe-wide.

I do recall that welter at one time was far ahead of the pack...by a few hundred, IIRC.

Now lightweight has taken over and just nosed to fore.

I wonder if breaking down the demographics that would point to a shift toward nations that focus traditionally on smaller pugs churning out more pros with a corresponding drop in some of the countries that generally produce a larger sort?

Now, where it really gets juicy is juxtaposing the information on this:

    :hey

(yes, it's combining hard data with subjectivity, but you can't rightly analyze without both)

...or determining how many of the p4p top 50 hail from each country, like.

Then from all that glean a picture along the lines of "Uzbekistan (picking a random example here) produce the highest # of boxers rated near the high end of the division that has the best ratio of high p4p talent proportionate to quantity of participants..." and thus infer you are getting a vague sense of where the strongest amateur programs might be located...

I guess there were a lot less CW's up until the late 70's for instance :D

About the demographic differences. Some of the big boxing coutries never had a single minimumweight fighter for obvious reasons.

He already fought twenty unbeaten straws, which means 8% of the division worldwide including himself.

Unless there is a massively disproportionate number of intact zeros campaigning down there, he is going to run out very soon.

And while you're at it, put the old numbers in the same graph.
