    Way too many. All these divisions are due to the greedy sanctioning bodies. Thats why I think the whole weight thing gets overblown. When the likes of Ray Robinson was around there where no JR. weight classes. There would also be more multi division champions all time as well.

    I agree. Also, there's too many sanctioning bodies and title holders in each weight division. I can't keep up w/ who's who or what's what.

    This is a misconception that far too many novice fans have. The amount of weight classes in boxing is PERFECT and is a product of 100 years of the sport evolving into the perfect amount of weight classes along with the perfect differences in weight between each class. Athletes and fighters at the top levels compete at such a high, intense and competitive level that just a few pounds makes a huge difference. Fights are cancelled by guys not making weight because it is a serious safety issue.

    For example, when Castillo failed to make weight against Corrales, and Corrales agreed to fight anyway, Corrales got hurt, and disposed of in 4 rounds I believe. The difference in this fight, compared to Corrales winning by KO in the first fight, was that Corrales had to drain himself to make weight, therefore losing a huge advantage in several ways, while Castillo didn't have to drain himself, therefore keeping his advantages.

    Another example. Manny Pacquiao. Why do you think he demands his welterweight fights, which are normally supposed to be at 147, be at 144 or 145? It is because those 2 or 3 pounds, that many boxing fans mistakenly think is no big deal, matter. Don't think for a second that Cotto wouldn't have looked at least a little better against Pacquiao at 147 as opposed to 145.

    The weight classes are all very necessary and are that way for a reason. Boxing has a loooong history to back that up.

    The majority of fans think theres too many Weight divisions and governing bodies;
    There is, but im all for it.Its far better for the fighters themselves in getting opportunities and big paydays.
    Theyre the ones getting punched and risking their lives after all.

    Also, with just one sanctioning body, the 'World Title' would effectively become the HBO/USA title, with non Americans struggling to get a look in on title shots.

    Agreed.:good
    The 'too many weight classes' line has become a simple mantra, without people actually thinking it through and its practical applications.

    There should only be one weight class so we can see dream fights such as Valuev vs Calderon

    Again, there is a good reason for that. 3 pounds separates 105 and 108, and rightfully so. 3 pounds is slightly under 3% of those weight totals, compared to the 6 pound difference between 154 and 160, which is slightly under 4% of those weight totals. It is more appropriate to have a smaller difference in the smaller weight classes because it matches up percentage-wise. One pound makes twice as much difference for 105 pound fighters than it does for heavyweights, literally.
