I recently talked to another trainer at another gym different from the one that I go to and he said that I should stay at 152 lbs.(im 5'7) I told him that my current coach wants me to drop to 141 lbs because of the obvious height disadvantage at 152. he asked to see my stomach so i showed him and I have decent abs, so he told me to forget about 141, theres no fat to cut anyway. He said my bodys still growing(im 18) and i shouldnt put too much strain on it to lose weight. In a way i kinda agree with him cause a few months ago i wasnt dieting or training as hard as i am now and i was able to get down to 143 pretty easily, now i can barely make 148 if i eat nothing and drink nothing after a workout. Maybe im having a late growth spurt? but im not any taller and i dont look any different and i havent lifted weight at all, but my muscle is still here. What do you guys think. I feel very strong and i can make 152 pretty easily and i feel strong at that weight, but i plan to compete and i dont wanna chase around guys 6'0 and have to be an in-fighter/brawler. Id rather fight guys my height and box but ill be seriously drained at 141 and im afraid cause i see what happens to guys like jones, byrd, and duran...
You don't want drain, but if you feel okay around 143, then 141 is nothing, lil bit of jogging. But yea, at 152 you are possibly fighting someone like me at 6' that is fit as a fiddle and can snipe you from out of your range. Certainly is more likely to happen at 152+.
Guys go through a growth spurt between 18 and 19 and tend to fill out a lot. If you are in good shape and feel comfortable where you are, I'd stay there. A height advantage isn't going to matter if you are drained and don't have any energy.
yea that was months ago i cant make 143 anymore. Today i worked out for 2 hrs had no water and ended up at 148 1/2. maybe i can but it will be extremely difficult.
Well Amy is right. You should fight where you are comfortable. Just work a smart training regime with a smart food plan and see where you end up. Height helps but it certainly isn't everything. I have a fight coming up sometime soon against a shorter 150-155 lb fighter, who has a completely different style then me. Last fight I saw him in, he knocked his opponent thru the ropes and practically into my lap, asleep before he hit the mat, as I watched from 3 rows back. Ya just never know.
Ya I hear you, i know it would be cool to be a devastating puncher, but i dont feel like thats my strong point. Not that im weak, but ive never knocked someone silly where thier legs turn to spagetti, if anything ive got accumulating punishment where i have the ability to wear down and get a tko, not just 1 HUGE punch. And besides that, I feel like i have very good speed and athleticism/footwork, and i have more ability and desire to be a fluid technical boxer instead of a skill lacking, rush in throwing wild punches, brawler. But ill never be able to use this unless i fight someone my height/ shorter. Don't get me wrong, there are skilled in fighters out there with good defensive skills(toney, duran, prime tyson) but i dont think defense is my trainers strong point. Im probably gonna eat as healthy, natural and organic as possible, but im gonna eat until im full. **** that low calorie ****, im a hungry dude.
People also need to take into consideration what fighting at a lower weight than they can comfortably maintain is like. It's not like walking into the gym, fully hydrated and nourished. You have to get there by cutting water, and calories (which in turn cuts vitamins and nutrients) and by upping your activity. This is a huge toll on your body and energy level. Being bigger and taller isn't much of an advantage when you don't have the energy or strength to use it.
yea im probably gonna be 152, damn i wish i never messed abound with bodybuilding, i used to be so lean and agile, and though i regained my athleticism and fitness, i can't lose my muscle. While keeping muscle without working out may seem like a gift to some, for me its a curse lol. I hope I grow taller within the next 2 years cause according to most sources you grow till ur about 21 or so cause 5'7 sucks lol or i at least slowly lose my muscle.
No point killing yourself to make a division to have one given advantage (height/reach) which will be outweighed by the negatives it brings with it (think effects of being weight drained!).
if you fought 152, you would fight guys like me. rangey, 6'1 and a bit. powerful for my weight class. up to you. let your body be the judge of wats the right weight
Kids today often get poor quality training and bad advice. The best idea is to get in boxing shape and let your body weigh whatever it wants. You will perform best at your natural fighting weight. When it comes to style you have to accept the physical limits placed on you by your body. If you are naturally short and stocky, then that is the style you should adopt. I have a suspicion that your body weight will drop once you get in better shape.
I thought we filled out in our 20s. I have filled out, added quite a bit to my frame, which has also grown. Spot on, amy!
