I'm not so sure, Larry Frazier, with 17 ko's in 19 wins had a pretty decent punch! Badly outclassed by Super Greg, mind.
What weight do you lift from and what are your record weights for the big lifts? Never entered comps but did a few years building up meself actually.
I think this reasoning is strange. No one would contest that 40-50 lbs weight difference made Dempsey and Marciano punch harder than smaller power punchers like Hearns or SRR, but it's obviously blasphemy to claim the same or even greater weight difference made guys Lewis and Klitschko punch harder than Dempsey and Marciano. I agree that there are diminishing returns for weight in terms of power after a certain point, but that the returns are zero or even negative over about 185-200 lbs sounds kind of stretching it in my ears. Even more so since 185-200 lbs is conveniently the weight of favourites like Dempsey, Marciano and Louis.
With reference to powerlifting it should be noted that though the lighter lifters are p4p stronger than the heavier guys that the heavier guys outlift the lighter guys, hence are stronger... Now,just use the same logic with heavyweight punchers and see what happens... Come on Janny, explain? ps; wheres the mythical diminishing and/or negative returns over the 185/200 pound mark in powerlifting? (hint,it dont exist!) Also, very good point that bokaj mentioned, you guys would call me nuts if i compared hearns' power with say marcianos' because of the 40 pound difference, yet routinely do the same and more with marciano over LL....
I am not at competition level yet by any means. I curently bench 209 lbs which is not bad for a 5' 5'' shrump. Perhaps now that I have my disertation out of the way and a bit of free time I can do something with it.
I follow your logic janny, some good points i think. However,at the elite powerlifting level the bigger guys will 99.99% outlift the lighter divisions,so why not the same thing in boxing?
What weight tho, short people can have an advantage when benching especially if short armed. I think i got up to about 209 for 10 reps and just over 250 for one. I put some years in tho, it sure don't happen overnight. I was at a usual weight of 172. Never quite reached the respected 1.5 X bodyweight.
I weigh in at 151 lbs which goes quite a long way on a guy of 5' 5''. I also have the advantage of Marcianoesque arms, hence not far to lift the weight. I am curently on 209 for six reps, and usualy do three sets of six.
Even if the 2 men are the same strength (and o average the bigger guy is stronger), the bigger guy has advantages in: Punching Punching - heavier man simply has more weight behind his shots Clinches - leaning on the smaller guy tiring him. Reach&height - very important factors
My guess is that power to weight ratio comes into play and beyond a certain point a man just cant unload his body intoa punch as effectivley. The bottom line is that I really dont know why it is. I do think however that the biggest hitters of 210 lbs such as Max Baer and Earnie Shavers hit as hard as guys like Lennox Lewis and Wlad Klitschko. Lennox might just be the hardest punching heavyweight champion of them all but is he as far ahead of Max Baer as his 35 lb weight advantage would suggest?
I knew you were a small man janny. I profiled your posts and psychologically speaking had some sort of 'napoleon syndrome' in my mind..... Im the same, thats why one of my faves is 'giant killer' roberto... Ps; i agree with your above post, above a certain size mobility may affect p4p power,i can also agree that certain guys can punch as hard at 210 as guys at 240. Maybe powerlifters are more scientific in their training or punching is soo different that it is not analagous with powerlifting...
Now you're talking! Of course, 35 lbs counts for less between 210 and 245 than it does between 110 and 145 for example, but nobody has disputed this, really. The only thing being pointed out is that those 35 lbs does make a difference in some cases. In general the 245 lbs boxer will punch somewhat harder than the 210 lbs boxer, and since Lewis punched really hard even for a guy his size it's reasonable to suggest that he might be the hardest punching champ of them all. So we seem to agree.
While I am admitedly a shrump and like little fighters who beat up bigger fighters my friends will all tell you that I am not aflicted with Napoleon complex. I actualy rather enjoy being 5' 5'' and have had a couple of verry tall and elegant girlfriends next to who I looked rather preposterous but I never had an issue with it.
