How has the weight of gloves developed? I know boxing gloves over time got bigger and heavier. When was the last chance in size of boxing gloves?
Christ, it had to be back in the 1960s when Sonny Liston was King....... By the 1930s, Everlast and Ben-Lee were making quality gloves..... Joe Louis fought with 8 oz. gloves that I know of..... That was a standard size for the boxers / fighters during the 30s... By the 1960s, guys 175 and up started using either 8 oz. or 10 oz. gloves depending on the contract.... Since the late 1980s, anyone from 105 to 160 pounds still uses 8 oz. gloves, while 168 and up now use 10 oz. gloves..... MR.BILL
i thought that 147 was the changing point between 8oz and 10oz but i could be mistaken and its splitting hairs anyway
When gloved boxing started to become comonplace in the 1880s there were: Hard gloves (2oz leather gloves) Soft gloves (4oz horse hair gloves) Some states mandated 8oz gloves which were seen as pillows at the time. John L Sullivan fought with everything from 2oz to 8oz gloves. As boxing became legitimate 4oz gloves became the standard. Around the 1920s 5oz gloves became the standard. By the 1930s 6oz gloves were introduced. 8oz gloves became standard in the 1940s.
Always amazes me when I see opponents in the same bout wearing different gloves. Yes the gloves would be the same weight in each case - but as most of us know - each brand just make them a little bit different to the next, and the amount of padding on the knuckle varies a lot between brands. It all comes down to the contract agreements etc for the fight. But for one guy to have less padding across the knuckle than the other, in the same contest, to me is just plain bizarre!
i always thought it was 147 too. as for dempsey and his 16oz gloves.i've used those gloves ,and the horse-hair padding ends up everywhere but on your knuckles. even modern gloves end up with no padding once there worn out.
yeh i remember watching Turpin-SRR a while ago and he was skimming the horse hair away from his knuckles in between rounds also Tyson did the same in his fights
I imagine that 6 oz. gloves still were lingering in boxing in the 1930s, but from what I have seen in the heavyweight title fights from that era, dudes like "Schmeling, Sharkey, Carnera, Baer & Braddock" were using 8 oz. gloves in them title changing fights..... Primo Carnera, like Sonny Liston couldn't get his paws into any glove smaller than 8 oz.....:-( MR.BILL:bbb
I've seen a lot of footage of marciano constantly re-adjust ing his gloves during fights, but i always thought that was because of his "small hands" issue - i gotta do the same thing when I wear 16s because the pockets are just too big for me.
