Lol, Roy Jones was on a specific weight training routine building up to the John Ruiz fight, he put on some noticable weight and he won the fight, therefore I give you one fighter who has benefited from lifting weights.
RJJ is one of the best fighters in the history of boxing, and Antonio Margarito is known for his conditioning/ability to take punishment.
You serious? Holyfield, Whitaker, Klits, Mayweather etc. In fact it's hard to think of a fighter who hasn't lifted weights at some point or another. I'm guessing you're just trolling though or having a laugh.
I was a semi- crossfitter up until about last fall. Its good for GPP but not good for athletes in my opinion. The reason I changed my mind is becuase of what crossfit is.There doesn't seem to be a reasoning for their programmng. Cossfit is the sport of exercise, so crossfitting makes you good at crossfit. Though my conditioning did improve, I lost lots of strength. But it wasn't boxing type conditioning, but more just general workout conditioning, if you know what I mean. Plus I started having serious tightness in muscles that I never have had before and I am an avid exerciser. For example, theyprescibed olympic lifts for multiple reps ... NOT GOOD! The whole purpose of an olympic lift is to develop explosve power. This is done in the < 5 rep range ... well, they do power movements for several repititions. Plus most of the elite crossfitters, were athletes prior to doing crossfit. Unless you are a wekeend warrior who just wants a good quick workout or are preparing for the crossfit games, I wouldn't recommend it. Just my .02 cents
That's a real old school type of thinking. The days of road work are pretty much non existence for modern fighters. There have been plenty of fighters who have benefited from weight training: Hopkins Marquez Klitschos Holyfield Pacquiao Mosley Ortiz Marquez Are you confusing weight training with lifting weights? The difference is lifting weights is stuff like bicep curls, leg press machine, basically bodybuilding stuff. Now this type of training, I agree, isn't suited for fighters. But Deadlifts, Push Presses, Explosive Squats, etc.. are very good exercises to develop a fighters strength/power, while not putting unwanted hypertrophy (muscle mass) which can hinder performance, unless moving up to a different weight class To support my argument I have a certification as a MMA conditioning coach (which has a section dedicated to boxing conditioning) and weight/resistance training is covered in throughout the certification manual just as much as bodyweight training. Also Ross Enemait (Infinite Intensity) who is a pretty successful boxing trainer, incorpates weights, sandbags, kegs, etc,, into his fighters training and backs up his statements with facts about the benefits of proper ewight training.
As you can see in above post, I would recommend checking out www.rosstraining.com . This guy has a great websie and I higly recommend his books and dvd's. And I am not affiliated with him or make money by referring his material. I just appreciate his knowldge and great ideas to enhance strength and conditioning, esp. for fighters. I myself do a lot of deadlifts and KB squats, swings to develop my srength and power. I alos do a lot of conditioning training in the anerobic sense (sprints, skipping, tire flips, etc...) vs just jogging. Don't get me wrong, I do jog but it i mainly just to let my thoughts flow and I usually do it on off days.
