Good post. Pavlik pushing Miranda around is a prime example of this, Miranda quite obviously is lightyears beyond Pavlik in physical strength, yet Pavlik manhandled him.
If a boxer or fighter is truly concerned about staying within their weightclass I would not employ back squats or even front squat. I'd stick exclusively with goblet and single leg type squat, and focus much more on the deadlift If you are looking to add muscle though, SQUAT with a barbell. If you are tall and back squats are mechanically difficult, then front squat
Functional Strength- 1. The athletes strength relative to their performance activity 2. An individuals strength within a specific athletic activity
Danny "Little Red" Lopez Alexis Arguello Tommy Hearns Kelly Pavlik Ad infinitum Leverage is the key to punching power, not a good looking physique.
Weight training does improve your power, Mosley, Kelly Pavlik, De La Hoya, Arthur Abraham, David Haye, Frank Bruno, Shannon Briggs, i could go on all these guys are "huge punchers" maybe not the "best boxers" but they all do weights.
Pavlik is very strong and has been lifting weights for years, maybe his physique isnt as good but theres no way miranda is lightyears above him in strength. No Way.
yeah there all big punchers and do weights, forgot to add one, Danny Green he also does weights and big puncher.
It could be argued that Brunos Bodybuilder physique is what led him to loseing stamina and gassing out in some fights though. Briggs never had good stamina either, but that have something to do with his asthma aswell.
I have felt that doing fly's has definetly increased the power in my hooks, but for the most part I would say keep the weights to a minimum if you intend to box. Let's say around 30 minutes 3 times a week, mostly what you're going to want to do is explosive type workouts. Also train the motion not the muscle, if you isolate the muscle it will get bigger but require too much oxygen to be helpful while boxing. If you train the motion you can strengthen a lot more muscles without getting bulky. All depends what you're going for, it's all good in moderation.
Agree with this. Any of the strongman type movements will help massively, through increasing core, functional and explosive strength. I WOULD include bench presses though, as long as they're not done in a typical bodybuilder 3-1-3 tempo, but in a more explosive 2-1-1 tempo. Ditch the machines and stick with the dynamic exercises and you won't go too far wrong
