So, two eyebrow-raising occurrences last night on what seemed a dull routine showcase affair on paper.

First, you had bantamweight prospect "El Niño Maravilla" (loosely, "Wonder Boy") Iván Morales, younger brother of legendary "El Terrible" Érik Morales, dropping his zero to 19-11-2 former strawweight Edgar Jimenez via MD. This is absolutely shocking. Other than a knockdown scored over Carlos Buitrago (prior to suffering a TKO loss a few rounds later) in 2009, Jimenez had never been even vaguely competitive with anyone even vaguely good that he ever fought.

The apple hadn't fallen near enough the ATG tree for anyone to project Iván to be some world-beater, and many had been critical of his slow build-up, running up a 28-0 (16) mark without ever really being tested, yet he was considered a prospect and not as drastically inferior a brother as, say, "Bobby Pacquiao" or even Rigoberto Alvarez (though Rigo did technically become a world titlist, albeit via home cooking versus Ishida) and despite the substandard level of competition for his pedigree and experience, he did look the part and seemed to have a bit of natural ability. This is quite a startling case of being exposed.

THEN, you had Sharif Bogere, continuing his rebuilding tour after being schooled by Richar Abril 2½ years ago, taking on a much stiffer challenge than Jimenez in Daniel "Cañerito" Ruiz. Cañerito does spring the occasional upset, as over Ivan Cano, the previously unbeaten Jamie Kavanagh, and very nearly Rey Bautista in a split decision loss in the Philippines. Still, this was someone you would've expected was brought in to extend Bogere's streak of knockouts to five in a row...and that is what seemed on its way to happening, until Bogere caught Ruiz with a hairline-skimming top-of-the-head right cross that Ruiz was successfully able to sell, with melodrama befitting a soccer player, as being a foul.

In the words of Bogere, from his Facebook page: "Well this is what happened #NC he walked out the ring, the ref didn't give him any count,he went down twice in the first rd.(it was called a no contest?)"

What makes this especially odd (since the shot itself could be a judgment call without context) is that Bogere scored his 1st knockdown of the evening with that exact same punch in the same exact spot. A little consistency, ref, please! :-(

You can't give a guy a count one time and then let him get away with quitting and escaping the L on his record when he is hit with the same place by the same punch and takes a knee in the following round.

You have to wonder if Ruiz would have gotten a pass on that anywhere outside Mexico. :think

Damn. So that kid's going nowhere. Clear now then why he was protected for so long. Nobody @ GBP wanted to offend Érik by having to be responsible for his kid bro getting embarrassed...but I guess it was inevitable. (especially after that much babying...though I'd have figured it would be someone better than Jimenez to do the job)

    Just not about that life.

Being a quick southpaw with educated feet will only take you so far, styling on some tomato cans and whatnot, but Morales is as thin on heart as he is light in the backside. No excuse for getting walked down and beaten up by an Edgar freaking Jimenez. :verysad

Crazy, because Érik personified the Mexican fighting spirit his little hermano lacks perhaps more than anyone else in a generation.

I feel a little bad for Bogere getting robbed of the KO there, even though he's pretty annoying. (he litters his social media feed with all kinds of weird stuff...College Humor and beheading videos, passages from the Quran and tons of random Islamic propaganda, drunk midget stripteases...)

Except for the fact that Morales didn't win the first half of the fight. That said, I had the fight up for grabs after 8, but thought Jimenez clearly took the ninth and tenth over Ivan to earn the nod.

  10. Whoa, I didn't think anyone else saw that but me. I like Sharif but he is a little random on things. Like Abril his star was rising and he sort of crushed his own success.
