Yeah when a mediocre small MW/JMW and a 2016 version of Felix Sturm are fighting for a version of the SMW title you know the division sucks.

But they want him to move up from the division where Cotto was recently champ. A guy who had come up 3 divisions, never proved himself the best in any of those divisions and had multiple losses to guys much smaller than middleweight so it's all relative.

It also isn't just Floyd fans who want him to move up, it's anyone who wants to see him in more competitive fights.

Since the SMW division is currently a desolate wasteland, this is the perfect time for Golovkin to move up since he is used to occupying low rent space at MW.
He should feel right at home at SMW, and most importantly, safe.

Recently dropped hard twice by Darnell Boone and was almost KO'd.

Dropped hard and was completely out on his feet at the hands of decent journeyman Dashon Johnson....like I said a KO waiting to happen.:-(

Good thread CST. Educate them fools. But in my opinion GGG should move to 168 in about a year or so if Canelo keeps pullin a Mayweathear and tells us that boxing is a business a.k.a "safety first" and BJS keeps refusing multi-million dollar offers. If those two don't wanna fight then you can't be undisputed and just move up clean that wasteland that's 168. Basically 160 2.0 without cash cow diva Canelo

The division has not been good for years in my opinion.

The last time the division was real good you had
    undefeated WBO champ Calzaghe
    undefeated WBA champ Kessler
    undefeated IBF champ Lacy
3 time and reigning WBC champ Beyer

then you had so many other top SMWs and former and later to be champs and they were good times with Calzaghe in a unification with Lacy, Kessler in a unification with Beyer and the two winners meeting.

Calzaghe as the winner moved up and the division hasnt fully recovered as Kessler who had been defeated was then considered the top SMW for a few years, he then losses when past best and suffering double vision to Ward but as a faded fighter beat undefeated Froch (which shows you how much the division had dropped from what I have wrote above), who then went and cleaned out what I felt was a weak era.
Consider Froch was fighting old faded past best G Johnson to a Mdec to get the Ward fight. The same G Johnson who when prime lost to Sheika to get the Calzaghe fight and who was completely outboxed when prime to Ottke.

That shows how weak it has been for years, but with Wrd being champ, America took some interest again in what was a very good division before, which many American fans probably missed out on previously

Still I dont think it is terrible and Degale is very talented and can be in big fights in the division

The division looks interesting with potentially a unification match coming up

They should get rid of it. Along with 154. You would see more competition at 160 and 175.

I just looked it up it was 1967, and I wouldn't be entirely opposed to it being done away with.

Haha 168 has been 1 of the most competitive stacked weight classes in the world for the last 2 or 3 decades..

Whether it was in europe in the 90's to around the same time with Jones and toney

    To the calzaghe Kessler era

    To the super 6 era

Its no different now whether you think the talent is up to par or not its still very competitive

160 has been dominated by 1 dude for almost every other decade beating no one notable until a welterweight or jmw moves up to give them their glory fight.

    Hagler 80's
    Bhop 90's

    Now ggg

Ggg has no notable wins at all!!!

Jack has a better resume right now

It ggg can move up and own 168 with no problem he needs to do it already time is running out
