I was impressed by the overall corner-work of Barker, he was excellent.

If he wasn't winning rounds then he should have been on Alexanders chest roughing him up and not giving him a chance to get into a decent rhythm. This may have paid dividends in the later rounds, but walking slowly forward with a high guard was not a good enough tactic to win the fight.

Purdey didn't throw enough punches and the ones he did throw didn't have any pop to them. I don't believe there was any chance at all of a late win, or even any real drama.

Purdy himself said "the fitness and sharpness just wasnt with me". What else does anyone need to know? Good call.

And a bad call to shunt Purdy into this fight in the first place.

Agreed, but purdy, nor eddie, can help the alphabet ranking shambles, nor the fact that bizier turned the fight down. He gave his all and went out on his shield. Even hopkins ringside, seemed impressed with his attitude. £100k better off and a bit of exposure..... Lee knows his level and in these coming days, i think will draw from the whole experience.

He was doing the same amount of **** all towards accomplishing the goal of knocking Alexander out as he was bucking for points, though, wasn't he? In the end, he didn't show Barker enough during any of his three-minute escapades - in seven tries - to suggest he was up to much of anything but walking haplessly into right hooks and uppercuts the rest of the night.

So you pull your fighter at the first sign of trouble, great corner work. If everyone used your guidelines there wouldn't be a fight ever go beyond 3 or 4 rounds, the first time the favourite steps it up his opponent gets the tug. :-(

I think Barker was out of his depth as much as Purdy, if not more so.

Not well done Darren Barker at all. It was premature and quite pathetic really.
Typical British mard arse ishness. People have taken far worse beatings and continued. Purdy wasn't put down, didn't appear hurt by Devons power, was talking and goading Devon on throughout the fight and clearly wanted to continue. You don't see Mexicans do that, or anyone else except the British. First sign of a fight breaking out and they pull the plug. Embarrassing.

Premature. And i hope someone pulls Darren Barker out of his next world title fight prematurely and see how he feels about it.

Purdy had maybe one round of fitness and then he was relying on toughness. I don't think it was damage that slowed him down as it was much to early that he became zombie like. Sadly, it still didn't bode well on a technical level as Devon was clearly using one hand and barely touching with the other.

Purdy had toughness at a high level though. If he doesn't improve technically then he can try the toughman route by having much better fitness so he can at least try to push top level fighters to their limit. He talks about 8 week fight camps though and a top top fighter doesn't do 8 weeks, he needs to look at 10 to 14 weeks if he wants to mimic Hatton like endurance.

Barker did well, Purdy was done and became a punch bag.

Tony Sims told Darren to stop the fight. It was already spoken about before the fight it was due to the weight loss.

So people blaming Barker can now blame Sims who explains the situation well :good.

I was proved right then? :think I said I thought it was a predetermined decision, one that the whole team made before they even stepped in the ring. Its all about image management for Matchroom.

Boxing has had it if you ask me, if they made a decision before the fight to take their man out, then something is very very fishy. Whether Sims explained the situation well or not. They had already DECIDED before the fight to do what they did. This could be seen as fixing by some Skills. There is no whacky conspiracy theory about it. If Purdy wasn't fit to fight and they were worried before the fight, then he shouldn't of fought! Simple as. How bad does that show the people around Purdy to let that happen?

Matchroom have seen it as - "Why let it go 12 and risk further damage to Purdy's image, when we can stop it in the 7th? Forget all about this fight and re-build him! F*ck it! He was never gonna win it anyway!" :bart

I will try find the article after work mate but Sims told Darren that if he was taking punishment after so many rounds get him out of there.

Reason was the weight draining and fact they already felt Lee had just a punchers chance and the weight draining and punishment would of taken it out of him.

Those Mexicans certainly have some of the bravest cornermen in the world, I'll give you that. :good
