Well done DeGale, now get rid of McDonnell

I understand people calling for McDonnell to get the sack because of things that have happened in the past but tonight of all nights it's rather harsh.

He just guided DeGale to a world title in the U.S. over a very talented fighter.

I never really saw what McDonnell was saying the corner, so tonight I can only judge him on the result and it was a good one.

 

The prob is i think james' win leaves a bit if a sour taste in our mouths as i think he could have stopped him or gave him a reall beating instead it was closer than it should have been

 

True, he could have done more, should have done more and I was starting to worry he was throwing it away.
DeGale was cruising through the first 6 rounds and then seemed to completely switch off after that, managed to have a decent last two rounds to clinch it.

I would call McDonnell out if I heard his advice and thought it was terrible tonight but the truth is I didn't see enough of corner to make a judgement.

 

He could just bring in AJ's chemist/dealer! Same results - no effort.

As another poster said, DeGale has his limitations. No jab being one - a huge one. Also poor engine-power. MCDonnell was always a fitness fanatic so that is surprising. James is not weighed down with oxygen-hungry muscle and he has a trainer who emphasises cardio - yet he lacks fitness. Strange.

Really his success is largely down to his 'wierd' style which confuses opponents. Once they figure him out - as Dirrell did - he seemingly has little to offer.

 

Yeh get rid of the man who just guided you to a historic world title, nice logic

Some bizarre comments in general on this thread. I don't think people understand how good Dirrell is. He's a massive SM with lightening quick hands, great fundamentals and good pop. Let's be honest, anywhere outside of the UK (and maybe even Nottingham) he beat Froch. It's just a little bit rich from Froch to be critical of Degale last night when James done a far more convincing job than he did on foreign soil! Sure JD could have been more convincing and he certainly did take the later middle rounds off. However, I don't buy the 'gassing' talk as he won 11 & 12.
One other thing, I think Degale has a really solid chin and have thought this now for a while.

With the exception of Ward, there is no one else out the at SM I would pick to beat him and that includes Froch. Degale might not have looked that quick last night but against Froch he will appear like Pernell Whittaker. Defensively he is very sound and Froch will struggle to get near him. It won't happen anyway. I can't have Groves either, Degale's ceiling is much higher.

I think people need to get a grip. It was an excellent performance against a top fighter.

 

Degale had a 16 week camp due to different fight dates and purse bid and final date messing him around etc, was probably overtrained, will give benefit of the doubt
