This content is protected Pat Benson, aged 74, was presented his award for the BBC West Midlands, Unsung Hero by former swimmer Anita Lonsbrough at a reception in the Mailbox hosted by Midlands Today presenters Nick Owen and Suzanne Virdee. Pat has changed the lives of thousands of youngsters from a diverse range of backgrounds during his 38-year career at Small Heath Amateur Boxing Club. He continues to devote 35 hours a week to running classes, organising boxing events and working as club secretary, completely as a volunteer. As regional winner, Pat now progresses to the Unsung Hero final at the star-studded BBC Sports Personality of the Year at the LG Arena on December 19. Mark Hayman, editor of Midlands Today, said: “He is a true inspiration to everyone within and outside of the sporting community.” He is an absolute top bloke who has taught me more than a few tricks inside the ring and deserves every bit of credit he gets also well done to paddy benson who is an excellent coach and has helped many people find a better life through boxing and continually is taking young lads to the top amateur levels

Well done Mr Benson :good There are loads of amateur coaches up and down the country, in small anonymous clubs, just like Pat who dedicate themselves selflessly in order to provide opportunities and sanctuary to many youngsters. Whilst many of them may not be fortunate to have bona fide stars or championship calibre boxers, their success can be quantified by the fact that they are indeed helping their local communities and indeed bring focus, discipline and respect into the lives of many youths who may otherwise venture off onto less savoury paths in life. So I like to think that the award and recognition Pat Benson is rightfully receiving is a representation of all those unsung heroes of the amateur boxing world and their local communities.
