Its the end of a era in Welsh Boxing Histroy. Only last week - Gareth Bevan sadly passed away. Bevan had run the old Boxing Shed for over 40 years since it opened in the 1960's. During that time - when he first opened the Club - on the very first day - fate brought him together with a 9 year old Colin Jones came under his wing and was with him through all the amateur days and won Schoolboy and Welsh titles and took him to the Olympics - and stuck with him all through his professional career until the end - and guided him to be one of Wales best ever Champions - in a path of brutal punching destruction cleaning up the British and Commonwealth and European Welterweight titles all by brutal knockouts - and Bevan was in the corner when Jones challenged for the WBC & WBA & IBF World Welterweight Titles against Milton McCory and Donald Curry. He also trained other Champions the likes of British Champion - Floyd Havard - who fought for the IBF World Lightweight Title. Bevan retired from running the Boxing Club some years ago - in the 90's - but still lived in the local community. Sadly he passed away last week. Quickly following that - it has been revealed the Boxing Club - a mere 14 X 7 metre pre-fabricated building dating back to the 1950's when it was orginally a council building - will be demolished - bringing the end to one of best amateur boxing clubs in Welsh history. Since 1968 it has produced : 40 Welsh Champions 10 British Title Holders 1 Welsh Boxing Legend Later this month it is to be demolished. Colin Jones who now has taken over from his former mentor Garerth Bevan - by running the club himself said - "It will be sad to see this place demolished, it holds a lot of memories for me. It produced so many champions". But the end of the old era will be replaced by the beginning of a new era for future generations. While the original boxing shed - and the people who made it - fade into history - A new state of the art modern boxing gym - will be built on the site - for the future of Welsh Boxing.
